Second Wave of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 600 Products Due For May

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680 literally kicked the door open as it made its entry. We're learning of NVIDIA's plans to milk the GK104 chip by carving out two more SKUs: the GeForce GTX 670 Ti, and GTX 670. These two SKUs will let NVIDIA capture price points deep within the $400-499 and $300-399 ranges, to compete with AMD's Radeon HD 7950 and Radeon HD 7870. These two SKUs will be released in May. Around the May-June time-range, NVIDIA could also introduce the GTX 690, which we're hearing is a dual-GK104 graphics card that's designed to compete with Radeon HD 7990, which launches in April.

Also in May, NVIDIA will launch desktop discrete graphics card SKUs based on the GK107 chip, which makes up its GeForce GT 650M/640M mobile graphics SKUs. Following this, some time in Summer, NVIDIA will release a new chip, the GK106, which will make up the GeForce GTX 660, which will be out to compete with Radeon HD 7850, and HD 7700 series. It looks like NVIDIA is waiting on current inventories of GF114-based SKUs to get digested, including those of the recently-launched GeForce GTX 560 SE, and is hence in no hurry to launch a new GPU to capture the sub-$250 price-points. Besides the dual-GPU Radeon HD 7990, there's nothing new in the works, at the red camp that we know of.

The top-end dual gpu card shootout will probably end up like the race between 6990 and gtx 590 went. Pretty much even except for the games that nVidia pays for better optimization, and even then the difference will only be a few %.
They both have great scaling in multi gpu. It all comes down to drivers, and the fact that most games are more optimized for nV.

I was planning on GK104 when it was slated to be the 670 though now it looks like the actual 670 lienup will be no faster than GTX 580 at the same price point so anyone with a 580/570 will have to spend $100-200 more for a marginal upgrade... yay :shadedshu

When you’re that late to off-setting the rival is it competition? You could have the same story in May taking about AMD 8XXX offerings, that says they'll show in August and say they’re competition to Nvidia's latest offerings, all this no longer matters if AMD/Nvidia are this far out-of-sink in product cycles. Price to performance is what matters, but ultimately being able to get one and enjoy it matters most! The guy who got a 7970 in January has enjoyed 11 weeks of competitive FpS, while lot's of guys still hold out for a GTX680 to get back on the shelves. Sure today a $50 savings feels good as you wait, while the other guy enjoys at say $5 a week. So, it’s pay me now or play it latter... in this case much latter.

It’s nice they finally are saying something (even when so tardy), but the question is will these offerings really be able to compete with 7870; if they can't work in the technology, components and PCB at a $300-399 cost for the "Clock Speed Nanny" This isn’t saying they need to rely on that this time, while I'd assume not?

This is a bunch about nothing; we all knew this would happen. I took away it's going to be much later than expected, or to build any momentum and the GTX680 stroll now feels like a crawl. I ask why it taking 3 mo's to get a suppose good chip and and known competive targets ready? That to me is the real story...

Since when 3 months is "oh no, it's too late"? Fermi was 6 months late and it actually increased nvidia's discrete market share to 63% in Q4 2011. 2-3 months in a 1.5 year generational life cycle isn't much.

EDIT: I mean 500 fermi, as 400 didn't so well against HD 5000, as we all know.

Most if that wasn't from gaming desktop sales, but from Tesla computational sale. Given the GTX680 sorely was reduced in that compared to Fermi that won't be a boon at least till a GK110, but even then we don't know.

That is for Q3 2011, not Q4.
Again, where does it say the discrete market share grew because of tesla sales? Cause there isn't even a single word mentioning tesla.

The bulk of desktop sales come from performance and mainstream cards, not high-end geforce or tesla and quadro cards.

The Steam hardware survey only shows you a subset of the market, namely the game players who play on Steam. The actual discrete gpu market is many times larger than that. Keep that in mind.

8800 GTX vs 7900 GTX was around 35%
8800 GTX vs GTX 280 was around 32%
GTX 480 vs GTX 280 was around 33%
GTX 480 vs GTX 680 was around 27%

give or take a few bad benchmarks and we look at roughly a 25-35% gain generation to generation if we add in refresh series aka 9000 and 500 it looks worse but in general each gen is a 30% bump where people get this ridiculous 80% increase is beyond me
