With over-production, swelling-inventories, and cutthroat competition that doesn't allow even subtle price-increases, DDR3 is a lost-cause for DRAM makers such as Samsung. It is hence hedging its bets on the early arrival of DDR4, and the only company that can make that happen is Intel. Samsung is not only a major supplier of DRAM memory, but also a big player in server memory. It had its first DDR4 UDIMM ready as early as in January 2011. Reports of Intel slating DDR4-equipped platforms in 2013 has Samsung perturbed. Samsung and Hynix are the only two DRAM majors with developed DDR4 products. According to DigiTimes' analysis, DRAM vendors see DDR4 as the only way they can pull themselves out of their ailing situation.

I think this is a case of give and take.....

Intel wants 5mm thick hard drives for their 'ultrabooks'

SAMSUNG wants DDR4 despite them not actually owning a hard drive department anymore (curse you seagate!)

with how much power IB CPUs and DDR4 draw, this can only be seen as a perfect match for ultrabooks/ultraportables.

DRAM prices are getting way too cheap... Unlike HDD prices being sky high. I'd love to see lower HDD prices in exchange for higher memory prices but that's not how it works :(

It's awesome as a consumer, but having HDD prices still really high is making it near impossible to build reasonably priced systems. I miss being able to scoop Cavier Black 1TB drives for like $70 :[

I might be biased though, I got 50GB of RAM but I'm in need of 20TB of HDD lmao

Yea I picked up 24Gb of DDR3 1600 for about the price of a 1.5Tb drive... I wish like hell I would have picked up a few more 1tb drives when I got my last 2 WD blacks for $79ea.

I was about to pull the trigger on 10TB right before the prices sky rocketed :( Been waiting for acceptable prices since

yes thats why they wrote: "DDR4 as the only way they can pull themselves out of their ailing situation" :)

We're almost there!

Friend bought a Samsung F4 2TB for $169 two months ago.

I bought one for $149 one month ago.

Now you can get them for $129.

At next drop, hopefully to $109 or lower, I'll probably be ready to grab 6.

is it just me or does that chicks face get really creepy after i cppl seconds of staring???

The blurring makes her look like a clown with an evil grin.

Thing is we don't need it. The real world performance gain going from mediocre DDR3 to the very best available is already so marginal, even on high-end systems. Even DDR2 wasn't really holding us back - Skulltrail did great on 800MHZ CL6, even when compared to modern systems.

Things might be different in the high-end server market, to be fair. Llano has shown that faster memory can really come in handy where more powerful intergrated graphics are in play, too.

yeah for everyday use and even gaming not a huge deal atm, but for servers and virtual systems it would be a massive step up. for everyone it will be eventually.

I really hopping that DDR4 comes out so i can skip DDR3 completely. :D I can never let go of my old stuff.

Sleep more.
It's just an illusion created by your mind trying to fill in the missing detail.

Read: samsung wants to sell overpriced DDR4 memory

Samsung wants to make money selling DRAM instead of losing money. Prices are unusually cheap right now.

why is it only Intel can initiate DDR4? AMD can't make a DDR4 chip/chipset?

^intel has over 90% of global server market share and since they will be able to achieve crazy low power draw on 22nm, most new server purchases will have intel inside

+1

Im with you dude, im still rockin 4gb of ddr2 @ 800mhz

Because Intel has the Market Share to do it. Not other company (even AMD) is even near having enough of a stake in the market to force a massive change.

Not other company (even AMD)

if Amd upped(and had the IMC too) then it would force the issue, as intel wouldnt be impressed with a percieved advantage in their opponents court and neither would those who favour intel systems so in turn it would probably force intels hand a bit imho
though in all honesty only intel are likely to have An Imc on chip upto it

AMD plans to go DDR4 in 2013. They delayed G2012/C2012/FMx because they can go DDR4.
