It's confirmed that AMD's "Trinity" APUs, which started shipping to ODMs in mid-April, will launch in May, only that these will be the mobile variants of the APUs, featured in mainstream and compact notebooks, and value netbooks. The launch of desktop variants of these chips will have to wait till August. A DigiTimes report points out that the new Piledriver microarchitecture-based Trinity APUs will bring with them up to 25% increase in processing performance, and up to 50% increase in graphics performance, over current-generation "Llano" APUs.

That would be much better.

Still thats a nice jump considering how poor Bulldozer was. 720 laptops are going to be nice. Dual GPU laptops will be even better. But Intel will own the 1080 with their CPUs + discrete. They got the high end squared away.

What is more important is how much Trinity can do besides CPU/GPU. They added a lot of other attractive tech for battery life/etc too. If the price is right...it will be good competition. Force Intel to be more aggressive on prices to compensate. Also to finally maybe innovate their IGPs. But we'll see about that come Haswell. Figured it would take Intel about 3 gens to get something competitive to APUs.

Whatever will be the CPU performance, I can wait few more seconds to decompress something. 35W TDP is great with strong graphics, hope to see in more expensive laptops as well, not only in the crappy ones.

Would be nice if they focused on power consumption figures instead, the APUs have a noticeably poorer battery life than the Intel ones, even after considering their beefier graphics.

piledriver has a 25% improvement at the same clocks?
seems fishy :wtf:

If I recall the clocks are actually significantly higher.

25% IPC increase? I would bet on something more like 8-10% for most applications.

25% that wil make it as fast as phenom ii

Umm the claim is against Llano which is actually a faster Phenom II already. But it's a moot argument anyway since they need higher clockspeed to attain that (now if power consumption come into the play...).

Make you wonder what's the point of using BD architecture in APU eh?

Each "core" is smaller, it allows more room for the GPU and other components. A BD module (2 threads) was something like what, 35% bigger than a single Phenom core?

So Bulldozer was 25% slower than Phenom II? :slap:

So Llano was 25% slower than Phenom II? :slap:

At games in average the A8 3850 was like the phenom II 955 so 25%+ should be like the 980... or who knows, maybe even better

Better, given the new instruction set support like AVX. The A10 two high en variants I've heard about are a 100w part with unlocked multiplier, 3.9ghz speed, 4.2ghz turbo, and a 3.6ghz 65w part. Both with an integrated Radeon HD 7660g.
So fun to note, PD-L3 is looking to be as fast clock for clock as Llano and clock higher, and retain or inprove power efficiency. Wonder how PD+L3 will look on AM3+.
But I suppose we'll wait for Wiz's review.
Though, since the chips are out this month, shouldn't we start seeing boards soon?

Isn't Trinity supposed to sport piledriver cores? Does this mean Trinity is coming before Piledriver FX cpus?

Exactly.
Man, I wish Piledriver FX cpus would come out at the same time as Trinity, or even sooner.
