I think this is actually your best option if you're not a gamer and even then more support is growing for distos like Ubuntu. Actually I made a small partition on my SSD RAID for Ubuntu and believe it or not fglrx supports crossfire. I don't really have anything to try it on though.
And unfortunately i'm a gamer, this is why i can't use Linux as my main OS. I started trying out various Linux distributions about 3-4 years ago and since then i always have something on my secondary hard drive. Currently i use Linux Mint 13 (with Mate DE) which is great but i hate rebooting my machine every time when i wanna have one quick Battlefield 3 game. Steam is working on their client for Linux OS, really looking forward into.
