Illegal music downloading much higher than usual

The RIAA, in an effort to prevent piracy, sends reports to universities of students that are pirating music. The universities that receive those reports must then act to stop repeat offenders, or else the entire school can get sued. The five schools that got the most piracy reports are... Purdue, The University of Ohio, the University of Nebraska, the University of Tennessee, and the University of South Carolina. The RIAA complained about nearly 15,000 students across 25 schools, which is nearly three times what that figure has been in previous years. The computer administrator at the University of Michigan has a very interesting quote on students explanations for all this piracy.

I get the whole spectrum of excuses. The most common (excuse) I get is, "All my friends are doing this. Why did I get caught?"

Most of the reported pirates use Warez, the Gnutella network (through Limewire), or Bittorent.

In any case, downloading music doesn't hurt the artists nearly as much as it hurts the producers, generally speaking Artisit get somewhere between 2% tp 7% of that sales money.

And it's too easy. And nothing you can do to make it harder, because it will just get broken. And this is coming from someone who own nearly 42days worth of music.

In some colleges, like FSU(Florida State Uni) they library has copies of albums, you can just go in, check them out, and rip them. How is that different from illegal downloads, and what right does anyone have to tell the library they can't have them there?

I think my 42days is like 90GB or close anyways, I have some FLAC and OGG rips in there. I was thinking of putting up an internet radio station thats all my music, completely on random.....man would you hear some crazy stuff.

too bad you couldn't go into business selling hard drives that happen to come preloaded with XXGB's of data(Music) for 2x the cost of a drive. 160GB hard disk being bought for, say, 120 dollars full of music.

The local library has a full suite of movies, and gets new movies in when they are released. All for free. I mean, that's a ripping dream.

Well i say it isn't piracy... if you buy an empty CD in a story you already pay X% author rights on it, so technically if you download music and put in on a CD (for personal use) they can't do shit about it, because you already payed the author rights that you normally would pay on a "real CD" with authentic music on it...

They have no right really I dont think. In Canada I can go borrow any movie I want from the libary, if its at another branch they´ll bring it to my branch.. though sometimes ur put on a waiting list for some movies.

Since when is it an issue that the schools should handle? If the RIAA is so adamant about stopping the piracy (which never will end), why don't they do it themselves rather than through the threat of a lawsuit to put it on the university's plate? It's an almost entirely futile effort which is now taking resources from colleges. At least that's my 2 cents.

To access the University Internet don't you need to enter your username and passowrd? I am sure that if they wanted to, they can track you down and know who you are, and what you are downloading.

That's why people should stop downloading on university networks, do it at home guys!

Because when it costs $20k a year for a student to go to a university, the RIAA knows they have the cash .

Pffff....all those schools and my alumni school is not on the list, UCI (University of Chinese Immigrants). We must have the biggest piracy number out of all of them. All them Asian people (I am one so this is not racial, just truth) and how the hell do we not have the highest piracy number. Just to give you a picture. My friends' apartment housed 6 people and all of them leave their comp on 24-7 for bittorent. Nuff said.

Any Russian with a computer will do one of three things.

1. Start downloading warez

2. Open up a warez site.

3. Open up a store that sells warez and music for ~$2 a copy.


I did one and went to a three tons of times.
