AMD Launches New 690G and 690V Chipsets tomorrow

AMD will finally launch its long-awaited 690-series chipset-family tomorrow. Two variants will spearhead the release: the RS690-based mainstream AMD 690G with ATI Radeon X1250 graphics, and the RS690C-based value AMD 690V with ATI Radeon X1200 graphics.

AMD's 690-family hit plenty of snags along its development cycle. Early roadmaps showed a 2H'2006 launch, however, AMD kept pushing the launch back. Motherboard vendors blamed the delayed launch on AMD for multiple delays with the RS690. AMD's discrete RX690 variant that was to launch in the same timeframe as RS690 has yet to make an appearance. The ATI Radeon X1200-family IGP features two pixel-pipelines and two vertex-shaders. Unlike some ATI Radeon X1000-series GPUs, the pixel-pipelines have not been decoupled - the ATI Radeon X1200-family only has two pixel-shaders. AMD specifies a 400 MHz GPU-core clock for reference designs.

The ATI Radeon X1200 powered AMD 690V only supports D-Sub VGA and TV-output capabilities. AMD ups the ante with the AMD 690G with ATI Radeon X1250 graphics by integrating native DVI and HDMI output capabilities with support for HDCP, despite previous delays.

AMD's 690G will drive simultaneous DVI and HDMI devices too. It is up to the manufacturer to support the output capabilities of the AMD 690G, though some manufacturers have opted to provide HDMI outputs via an ADD2-style add-in card.

Ok, but my next build will need crossfire, Dual FX74, waiting on mobo (L1), 8Gb Ram(mobo),4Gb ECC for Ramdisk, Sata Raptor Raid (+), Either Kandalf or Lian Li case, Double Water cooler system(1CPU/GPU per), Any/all Ideas wlecome!

well that aint any HTPC then, thats a workstation...

HTPC are low power, low heat...with a large HDD, not much memory (htpc are not memory demanders, more towards cpu for decoding), and a Audio/video interface (tv tuner, etc...)

With current mobo's it would be a workstation, with new mobo, it should be one heck of a gamer. (providing they actually come out with the one I've heard rumors about). If they don't then I'll just wait untill AMD releases the new FX 64!!

Ive been waiting on these boards for ages. Will be ideal for my HTPC. Will be nice to see wome reviews, hopefully orientated to HD decoding and HTPC use.

LGA775 Crossfire boards might be hard to come by in the future, or at least over priced. AMD does own ATi now, even if ATi has a little bit of automny, every other news conference and release an AMD person seems to be speaking for ATi, so who knows.


Either way, this does look like a quality board for an HTPC. Just sit with its big old HDD and play movies all day.

Everyone is going to get a Core 2 Duo until at least 2008. If they dont release some quality LGA775 boards for CrossFire, they will lose the small ammount of marketshare that they still have left to grasp.
