WD Outs 8 TB My Book Duo and 4 TB My Book

Western Digital (WD) released new high-capacity variants of its My Book and My Book Duo external hard drives. The Thunderbolt-equipped My Book Duo series is expanded with a new 8 TB variant, which uses a pair of 4 TB drives in an internal RAID 0 configuration. Measuring 99 x 157 x 165 mm (WxDxH), the My Book Duo 8 TB weighs 2.26 kg. It uses an internal PSU, and features two Thunderbolt I/O ports that allow you to set up daisy-chains with other My Book Duo units, or other devices. The new 8 TB variant is priced at $849.99.

WD also introduced a 4 TB variant of its My Book USB 3.0 hard drive. The My Book encloses a single 4 TB hard drive. Measuring 48 x 135 x 165 mm (WxDxH), it weighs about 1.18 kg. It includes an internal power supply, and uses USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface (backwards compatible with USB 2.0) to communicate with the host. It is priced at US $250.

:O $849 It is pretty clever some of the features, but I can't help but think it might be cheaper to just build your own - home server- or the like that could do the same thing.

misread the article. Just saw that the 8TB also had double 4TB drives, so I suppose its not bad a deal after all. I must say I do like the daisy-chaining feature.

Couple of questions, can the housing be broken open to get the drive out? I also wonder what the specs are for the drive SATA etc? These are cheaper than the Hitachi 4tb drives at $300 @ Best Buy.

Interesting the WD website doesnt show any 4tb drives yet. Are these the not quite as good ones while they build up stock?

You can take these apart thats what I did. I got a 2TB super fast black drive for half the price because it was in a My book

this is the only 4TB that they currently sell. it got for around $500

My guess would be that they put in a new 4TB green and just haven't released drive only or this is a amazing deal and shows how much mark up they do..

Did anyone ever cover the release of the 2TB WD My Book VelociRaptor Duo? I don't remember seeing it in the news, it just kind of just popped up on WD's site one day.

"External Western Digital Enclosures: Do not remove the drive from the external enclosure. Return the drive in its original enclosure/plastic housing (without having been opened or dismantled, along with the power adapter). Please keep all software, manuals and interface cables. WARNING: Removing the hard drive from, a Western Digital single unit external enclosure, will void the warranty."

Screw the warranty, a lot of times it is cheaper to buy externals and pull the drives out than it is to just buy the drives outright. And if you do it right you can put them back together.

It is very possible they are using the 4TB Hitachi drives, seeing as how WD owns Hitachi.
