Colorful unveiled a new GeForce GT 640, the GT 640 PRO X4. Just as the name, the graphics solution delivers a reliable platform to ensure a stable business environment and to meet the needs of four displays connectivity. The display connectivity options include two DMS59 ports, and cables are provided that convert each DMS59 to two DVI-I single-link, which supports digital resolutions of up to 1920 x 1200 pixels. And each of the DMS59 ports uses EMI shield for reducing the noise signals.

The card is based on single slot, full height and fan cooler design. The clock is the same as the reference card, the core runs at 900 MHz, and the GDDR3 memory runs at 1782 MHz. The GT 640 PRO X4 uses NVIDIA GK107 with 28 nm architecture, and the TDP is only 65W. Unlike the low-end multi-display solutions, the Colorful GT 640 PRO X4 has 384 CUDA cores and 2G memory to meet the need of large resolution. Pricing information is not released.

Looks like a lower cost alternative to a Matrox card.

Lower cost, and many times faster. It can actually run Crysis.

Go back and tell the geeks of November 16, 2007 that crysis will eventually be playable with a low end gpu. You will either be considered a heretic or a prophet.

more like a heretic! I loved those "can my pc run crysis" threads. Too bad today we don't have that many games to absolutely rape super high end systems

I think the better question is... Why do we want our high end pc's raped?

Curious if this will treat each monitor as an individual screen of pair them like the Galaxy solution. I build multi-monitor systems supporting up to 16 screens and have been using the ATI FirePro products. I tried to hit a lower price point with a Galaxy video card but the piece of junk would always keep the screens locked together in pairs... meaning you couldn't freely set the screens in custom configurations within display settings, screen 1 and 2 were always paired side-by-side and screen 3 and 4 were always paired side-by-side. In other words, you couldn't stack the 4 screens on top of each other and have your cursor travel vertically across all 4 screens, you would always have to travel sideways between 1 & 2 and 3 & 4. Garbage.

The FirePro cards are significantly more diverse but still leave a bit to be desired in that screens only set up in display settings as a grid, still not full free configurability to have one or more screens set on a custom offset from the "grid".

Display port hubs still seem to be the best solution for full configurablity freedom, but that comes with its own set of limitations.

I'll have to keep an eye on this and see if they do the software side of it right.

Yeah, no one today looks towards Matrox for solutions unless you have a huge installation (8-64 video inputs/outputs). Aside from a few niche cases, the multi-monitor options from AMD and nVidia satisfy most needs.

With a possible shift towards ray-traced games in the next couple years, any of them will be able push to a system to the rape point. How much 'power' your system has directly correlates to how much resolution/AA/eye-candy can be applied, with maximums no system will be able to reach for a long time.

It was pretty playable on low end GPUs even back in 2007. My first play through of Crysis was on an X800XL, which I seem to remember being about the same performance level as an x1300XT at the time.

A company made these kinds of cards years ago (not Matrox), but I can't remember the name for the life of me.. It was like $100 with four outputs.

Colorgraphics (now out of business) manufactured 2 - 8 port cards using 1, 2, or 4 ATI GPUs. Multiple output cards along with support for multiple cards in one system was their focus, so prices were a bit north of $100.

I'd guess Galaxy, as they've done 2 or 3 cards like this and they were cheaper.

Really I thought the whole X800 series sat closer to an X1600/X1650? I played it on a 7800GS and single core socket 754 setup. Wasn't to bad played it at medium the entire game.

I think even back then everyone knew it would eventually be playable on a low-end GPU. Heck in a few more years it will probably be playable on your fridge or microwave (like Doom). It's just a matter of how long.

It is crazy to think Doom plays fluently on phones from 2 years ago
