Toshiba's Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced the wireless LAN embedded SD memory card "FlashAir." The FlashAir is a standard SDHC (High Capacity) card that incorporates a wireless LAN1 chip set plus antenna for wireless communications. For a limited time, Olympus will offer the FlashAir for free through a mail-in rebate when purchasing select Olympus Cameras. Rebate forms can be downloaded at www.getolympus.com/olympusimageshare.
"Sharing and transferring photos from a camera to all the various gadgets a consumer owns these days can be a tedious process," said Maciek Brzeski, vice president of product marketing and development of branded storage products, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division. "To simplify this process, Toshiba has created the FlashAir, which allows photos to be transferred wirelessly from a digital camera to a Wi-Fi-enabled PC, tablet or smartphone, removing the need for cables or card removal."
"Olympus is aligning with Toshiba on this sales promotion because the FlashAir offers a solution that enables users to send images wirelessly to their favorite social site easily and efficiently," said Katie Roseman, senior product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc.
The FlashAir is fully compliant with SD Association Memory card standards and is offered with 8 GB capacity. Data stored on the FlashAir can be read and transferred by using standard WLAN communication. Setting up the connection between the devices is a breeze as the FlashAir does not require any special driver or software installation and the built-in wireless LAN access point does not require the device to be connected to the Internet. The memory card allows its data to be accessed by several different devices at the same time. For instance, users can simultaneously show off their pictures to their friends straight from their smartphone while downloading the photos to their PC.
The FlashAir consumes minimal amounts of power as the wireless function is switched on only when necessary to prevent wasteful power consumption of the battery by the automatic-manual operation for wireless LAN functionality. The product comes with a standard five year limited warranty3, offering consumers great peace of mind.
Pricing and Availability
The FlashAir will be available at select retailers and on ToshibaDirect.com in November 2012 for the $79.99 MSRP or for free with a mail-in rebate with the purchase of select Olympus cameras through the end of 2012.
