Razer, the world leader in high-performance gaming hardware, software and systems announced today that the Razer Edge Gaming Tablet will soon come preinstalled with Steam software.

The Razer Edge tablet will come with Valve's industry-leading software, enabling gamers around the world to launch their games more quickly. The Edge is optimized for demanding gameplay and, through its mobile console and home console modes, it works seamlessly with Steam Big Picture.

"Razer has one mission in mind: to innovate for PC gamers worldwide," says Min-Liang Tan , co-founder, Razer CEO and creative director. "Providing users with access to Steam will enable Razer Edge users to play their favorite games with greater ease than ever before."
Steam is a leading platform for the delivery and management of PC and Mac games and digital entertainment, with more than 40 million accounts around the world and more than 2,000 titles offered.

"The Razer Edge has more than enough power to play the latest and greatest Steam titles and it is completely built with PC gamers in mind," says Greg Coomer , product designer at Valve. "The tablet is a great way to experience everything Steam has to offer, including Big Picture mode."

Yours for only £3000 and your first born child.
Features a gimped i7 and a gimped 680m/7970m.
Or could this follow the APU route like consoles?

Apparently it is a i7-3517U, GT 640M LE (384 cores, 16 ROP, 21 TMU, 500MHz core with boost to 570MHz, 2gb DDR3/128-bit at 900MHz), and 8gb DDR3 1600. Performance looks pretty good, Anandtech's review shows you can do 1366x768 with medium/high graphics and maintain solid fps in a lot of games. This managed 60fps in Skyrim on medium, nearly 70fps in Dirt 3, and even BF3 would seem playable at ~40fps.

That review also has a Trinity based system in the charts, and while it scores well it does fall short of the hardware in the Edge. But I think AMD could make some hardware that would pair extremely well with a design like this.

I really like this concept though, but we are probably a few generations away from making this a must have. AMD's APUs should really go a long way in taking something like this into the mainstream, or perhaps even the new Haswell chips could improve usability and maybe not even need the GT 640M LE.

Today, yes. Give Razer 5 years, support their development of such devices NOW, and we'll get killer portable gaming stuff. Battery life is the biggest contributing factor to the performance such devices can offer.
