Scythe Rolls Out Mugen 4 CPU Cooler

Scythe rolled out the fourth generation Mugen CPU cooler, in its home market of Japan. Mugen 4 (model: SCMG-4000), builds on the design of its predecessor with a feature it calls TMAPS (three-dimensional multiple airflow pass-through structure), a fin stack arrangement that works to improve air-flow and heat-dissipation to the flowing air. Another abbreviation Scythe is throwing at you is HPMS (hyper-precision mounting system), a new retention module that takes fewer steps to install, and supports all modern CPU socket types, including the upcoming Intel socket LGA1150, on which desktop Core "Haswell" processors will be based.

Scythe Mugen 4 retains the unique jagged aluminum fins of its predecessor, it is an aluminum fin tower type CPU cooler, which uses six 6 mm-thick copper heat pipes to convey heat to the stack. Heat is drawn from a nickel-plated copper base. A Falcon 120 mm PWM fan guides air through the heatsink, which spins at speeds ranging from 400 to 1,400 RPM, pushing 20.7 to 79 CFM of air. Measuring 130 x 88 x 160 mm, the cooler weighs about 625 g. Slated for April 24, it is priced at 4,980¥ (US $50).

While it's not exactly double considering inflation, yes, the 2s were only 25 bucks, then they stopped selling them. I doubt we'll be seeing any prices below stated retail. That doesn't seem to happen anymore.

Think Cooler Master. 212s did not cost 30 dollars (yeah they have rebates, but it's still a rebate and they're always changing).

No one seems to care to be competitive on air coolers. Nothing new has come out in over 2 yrs.

Wasn't 3 worse than 2 They just cheated with a faster fan.

When did Scythe come back? Last I checked they were ceasing all operations in American. Some Scythe rep came in and refuted that argument, saying they would continue to sell products to US distributors. A few weeks back, I was looking for a passive heatsink and I couldn't find Scythe products anywhere. What gives?

That was not the price when they were introduced. The current pricing reflects retailers depleting stock

I reviewed that cooler and it was very good but gargantuan.

There are still inventories of Scythe in the US, and it will return. The company is active in EU though.

F-A-N-L-E-S-S The Ninja is indeed frekin awesome.
Still using my Plus Rev.B from skt478, and even semi fanless.
Can't ask for much more AND at 5Ghz+

I think a lot of mis-conception about Scythe's approach, it's to being able to remove heat without a fan perse, if god forbid it should quit, but HTPC is a great choice.

They not trying to get the O/C Delta of the Year, but strap a killer fan on and they can do very well. I've seen a lot of test before [elsewhere] and just dont seem to add up to what my experince has been, and no way in hell I got some queenjewlengineering sample[lol]and bejeepers, I'd LOVE to have gotten the all copper Ed!!!!!!
