GeForce 8800 Ultra to Launch with the 8600 Series

According to several of NVIDIA's partners, NVIDIA is planning to release their GeForce 8800 Ultra together with the soon to be released GeForce 8600 series. The word in the halls is saying that NVIDIA is planning to release several GPU's on the same day. The 8300 GS, 8400 GS, 8500 GT, 8600 GT, 8600 GTS and the new 'monster', the 8800 Ultra. According to the same sources, the GeForce 8800 Ultra will be an overclocked version of the 8800 GTX aimed to deal with the upcoming threat from ATI's R600. The exact specification and technical details are still unknown at this stage. It is known that many of NVIDIA's partners are preparing for a hard launch.

That's great nVidia will be coming out with more affordable DX10 capable (supposedly) cards. I wonder how many of these new cards will be launching with defective G80 cores? Or is nVidia making new cores for the new cards? Well I guess it doesn't really matter to me as I am waiting for the R600.

8800 Ultra has to have something other than higher clocks, because u cant just overclock a card that has been out for such a long time and launch it under a new name, and also because u simply cant overclock the G80 very much without better cooling than the crappy single-pipe stock cooler.

I hope the show stomper on the 8800 Ultra is the memory. Last generation we went from 256MB to 512MB with the 7800 GTX 512. Maybe now we can sacrifice quantity for type and get GDDR4 (finally!). Of course, at this point GDDR4 isnt too much better than the 90ns GDDR3 used on the G80's and the X1950XT.

So all in all, this card will only make everyone who bought the 8800 GTX because it was the best feel bad. I mean, if ur going to make a card that is better than the 8800 GTX, at least make it a lot better - not a simple factory overclock that anyone can do..

Why yes... they can. The card manufs do it EVERY YEAR. its called a 'refresh'... and they get better at manufacturing, so they can quiet easily keep the best, coldest chips and just use them... its not like they need 10 million ultra GPU's.

My bet, is that the ultra will use 1GB ram, or DDR4 ram.

No, they cant. The clock speeds cant be the only difference. Just like u said, they will have to inhance something else aswell, and the RAM is the only option. So 8800 Ultra = 7800 GTX 512.

nVidia already owns a very large percent of the mainstream and of course high-end DX10 market (a very important one now), with their 300$ 8800 GTS and their 500$ 8800 GTX.

I wonder how many people are STILL waiting for the R600. *raises hand in cowers*

The point is the damn thing hasnt even been released and nvidia are pissing themselves so hurridly released an OCd version of the 8800, hilarious really. Instead of releasing something with genuine advancements they gave life to the "ultra" name again, with nothing different apart from stock clock speeds.. then lets not forget nobody has actually seen an 8800\8600 series actually rendering DX10. Oh then thers the fact nvidia cant get a proper stable driver either, nevermind a relatively bugless one .. I make my point.

the 8800gtx came out in august last year, i bet nvidia has just been sitting on the ultra since january (when the r600 was supposed to come out), its hardly hurried, just being released to coincide with the r600 launch, as nvidia probably planned all along

im guessing it will be a binned g80 at higher clocks along with 1ghz ram. it can easily be done with gddr3 and with ati buying most of the gddr4 the prices would be prohibitive.

with a raised voltage and revamped cooler any g80 could get a 100mhz clock bump. im curious to see where they go with it.
