Given that Intel's 4th generation Core "Haswell" family is based on existing 22 nm manufacturing processes, a market-scale transition between 3rd generation Core "Ivy Bridge" and it, is not as cumbersome as transition between two generations spanning across different processes. Intel plans to retire some of its best selling Core and Pentium LGA1155 parts by the end of September, to make room for Core and Pentium "Ivy Bridge" and "Haswell" parts in their place.

To begin with, a large number of Pentium and Celeron parts, namely G860, G645, G645T, G550T, G555, G645, G630, G620, G622, G870, G860T, G640, G630T, G640T, G550, G540T, G460, G530, and G530T, will be marked "EOL" (end of life), and will no longer be available to distributors and OEMs. From its Core i3 "Sandy Bridge" lineup, Core i3-2100, i3-2125, i3-2130, i3-2120T, and i3-2102 get the axe. From its Core i5 "Sandy Bridge" series, the i5-2390T gets marked EOL.

Good bye my old 2600K! It preforms so well at 4.5ghz :) I do not see the need to upgrade though.

What does retire means?

Does this mean that Intel is still producing those oldschool CPUs?

I still have a Q6600 up and running! No EOL for this one... :D

You sound just like my older brother, who doesn't even overclock his Q6600, and still uses Win XP Lite for his OS. I'm tempted to buy a 4770k, Z87 board, 2 x 8GB 2400 RAM, Platinum PSU, 840 Pro SSD, and a copy of Windows 8 Pro, send it to his house, and see what happens...

Apart from the OS I don't see why not, depending on what he does. If it's good enough for him, why replace it? Apart from the OS.

oh, but I do overclock my cpu... I just don't have the time to upgrade. Every time I think about doing it there's a new hardware that's being released...

Why the 4770K... and not the 4770, or the soon to be released clockbumped 4771... You say he doesn't OC, so pretty much, you're paying more for less (the Ks have disabled features). Also... why 2400MHz RAM again!?

As for the OS, I think he'll hate it, at least wait for the free "upgrade" to 8.1.
