XFX rolled out a custom design Radeon HD 7990 "Malta" graphics card, its second one since the XFX-branded reference-design card. Named HD 7990 Triple Dissipation, the card is essentially an AMD reference design PCB with a custom cooling solution by XFX, which involves a chunkier aluminium fin stack heatsink over the two GPUs, and its DuraTec dust-repelling fans, topped off with a solid milled aluminium cooler shroud. Based on a pair of Tahiti XT silicons in an internal CrossFire configuration, the XFX HD 7990 Triple Dissipation features out of the box clock speeds of 950 MHz core, and 6.00 GHz memory. The cooler makes the card three slots thick. If you can live with that, the XFX Radeon HD 7990 could be yours for under $750.

I had two XFX DD 7950's. The coolers are among the worst I've seen bar reference fan blowers.

Agreed, I had a few XFX DD cards myself and they look nice but the cards don't perform as well as the competition.

I have noticed as well since they became amd only they have realy droped the quality bar. Example: countless Pcb revisions on high end cards with reduced phases count and lower amperage vs reference and those swollen vapor chambers.

Gawd, not that cooler. I bought my HD7950 DD last february and until now I never failed to remind myself of my idiocy giving in to that sexy aluminum finish. That cooler is an 18th century furnace :banghead:

XFX is in the ditch that's for sure....and working to build this and releasing it at this point proves they're worse-off than I thought. It's like how late to the 7990 party (like there ever was one) can they be? While AMD is moving these out with price reductions, XFX comes in on Hawaii day? Would have been better to do this anytime like a week ago or a week after to really bury it under the radar.

Awful vendor

I would never buy XFX again. They make the worse cooling solution that sound like jet engines. Just terrible design here and the rest of their stuff.

Isn't this out already with reed fans on the egg for way under $750

Never had issue's with XFX my self but i believe it all started with the 7 series and them making there own coolers for the cards which failed and if that was not enough they started to voltage lock them.

I hope they learned a lesson and just don't voltage lock from the gecko on the next range.

If they screw the next range i be another jumping ship.

Their coolers look flashy but are awful performing. They release multiple models of the same cards and some don't have any heatsinks on the vrms, ram, and important areas.

Just realized there coolers are called ghost thermal tech,so that's why things disappear on some models. pun intended.

Always liked the chrome center piece on the fans :) Something that would have made the 780 Lightning aesthetically perfect if it wasn't for the third fan, yellow color scheme and blue LEDs.

So, does this retain that annoying coil whine that doomed the original reference model?

Which one?

Just buy a reference card and get a Arctic Cooler, can't go wrong with those.

I was looking for an artic cooler for my reference 7990. Which one should I buy? Cause I couldn't find a compatible one.

I also made the mistake of buying an XFX DD 7950 (at least it was a reference one before they started making the cards worse. It was cheap and it looks great, but >90c in Far Cry 3 with a mild OC and 100% fan speed? No thanks. I ended up shelling out $80 for the Arctic Accelero Xtreme 7970 cooler which also basically voided my warranty unless I can successfully remove all the heatsink goo I applied, and even then the thermal pads on the DD cooler sitting next to me are torn up and full of cat hair now, so hopefully this card doesn't die for another year.

The XFX 7850 DD 2GB I have runs pretty well, I had to replace the thermal paste (got permission from XFX) and dropped my temps a lot, like 10*C IIRC. I can hit 1250 core easy with near stock volts. The memory sucks though, can't overclock worth shit.

They will most likly except it back still.. it be hard to believe they would reject the card due to the pads ripping and should understand they aree one time use anyways.

It's physical damage they be bothered about.

Just to bee safe and you have registered the card send them a message that you would like to try the cooler on your card and wait till they ok it once they do let them know that some pads got damaged and see what they say.

They never gave me any issue's for the last 4 years. They even ok'ed it for me to take the shroud of the 6770 we have.. They don't care really as long as you don't go damaging shit.

No coil whine here with a refrence card.

You're quite lucky then. If you check out the review on TPU and other sites, you'll see that it suffers from this.
