Malaysian K9 unit sniffs out pirated DVDs

Most of us know the kanine units from Airports, which are suppose to sniff out illegal substances. Lucky and Flo are trained to find pirated DVDs. The Malaysian authorities managed to bust a three million USD pirating ring in the recent past and now have managed to uncover another 430,000 USD pirating operation after the police did not find anything during the first search. It would be interesting to see the success if the dogs are used in Airports on flights from Asian countries to the US.

Burned discs have a very strong smell to them that smells a little like pickles to me. Smell a stack of blank DVD's sometime and you'll notice it's overpowering. Normal discs don't have this smell at all for some reason.

The thing I am wondering is how do they know where to start looking. Do they just go through random apartments are something?

but i have a shit sense of smell, our art class had to leave the room once because of a massive bucket of turps spilling and its fumes overpowered everyone. I didnt even realise what was going on, i just sat there drawing and listening to my mp3 player and i couldnt smell anything

I can actually smell the spices people are using when they cook next door with the window open. lol

So, how do they tell the difference between DVDs containing "pirated" works, and DVDs containing my essays/papers and notes?

LOL ok ... so if I burn a "pirated" movie to a DVD+R, and I use a disc from the same pack of DVD+Rs to burn my notes onto, the discs use different plastics, and the dogs can tell the difference?

No, the disks that are manufactured are different from the disks you burn in your home computer.

DVD companies stamp the disks with a machine and then they probably use some chemical over the top of them when they are original copies. Wheras pirate agencies stamp the disks and probably use cheaper chemicals to seal the disk or whatever they do.

So if you have large quantities of disks next to the originals the dogs can tell the difference.

This found from a vet:

"They have been well trained to specifically smell the unique chemicals that go into polycarbonates and the solvents that glue the DVDs together and they are very very effective at doing that,"

These dogs dont go after small pirates like you, they chase after the big warehouses pumping out the dvds.
