Gigabyte WindForce-Cooled Radeon R9 290X Card Pictured

ASUS' R9 290X DirectCU II will likely have some competition when it actually launches as Gigabyte is working on its own custom Radeon R9 290X graphics card. Codenamed GV-R929XOC-4GD, Gigabyte's first non-stock R9 290X offering comes equipped with the dual-slot WindForce 3X 450W cooler that's supposed to be up to 15.9 dB quieter than the reference solution, and has an slightly-overlocked GPU (1040 MHz).

Gigabyte's card also features a 512-bit memory interface, 4 GB of GDDR5 VRAM, and dual DVI, DisplayPort and HDMI outputs. No word yet on pricing (or an actual release date).

What to expect: the same things on different models. Cooleng for at least will now be much better and hardworking frequency will not be so quick to fall on >700 hz .

Kinda odd for gigabyte to only OC 40mhz, usualy its least 100-200. Wonder if this could be due to 290x heat or maybe its pretty close to limits gpu can do?

I'm guessing they will bring out an SOC version like usual and they might be trying to make the gap between the OC and SOC models more significant. Pretty odd nonetheless though, especially seeing the 290X has some pretty high clocks to begin with - 40mhz does seem a bit small.

High clocks it couldn't sustain for more than a couple seconds

SOC? I think the stopped making SOC editions. GTX680 SOC was the last one.
But, they can make nasty versions without having "SOC" over it, just look at the GTX780Ti Ghz OC WF

gk110 being out since titan released, its known to overclock at least nicely. Base clock of 860mhz, with small overclock its boost will hit 1100-1200mhz or higher. R9 290 gpu being a new gpu its overclocking is still untested. and givin the heat it puts off it has been hard for anyone to test those waters as of yet. I don't think how amd said "up to" on this card and with stock cooling no one gets close to that up to number because the heat prevents it. Paying for something that suposed to be certain speed but ends up being slower kinda seems like a bait and switch to me. AMD should have a min clock like nvidia has so you know what you will at least get not what you can pray and hope to get.

I wouldn't worry about this Windforce3x model., should be plenty to keep below 75C.


Well if a ICQ2 His R9-280X cooler mounted on r9-290x passed furmark ~ 72-75C @ 1150-1200mhz (overclockers.uk user tested it), then this 450W cooler will too.

i doubt it will be that cold, i had a gtx 670 windforce 3, that was OC'ed to 1250mhz and under full load that would run around 70c. With that overclock if its legit i would bet more like mid 80's at minimum. But mine was inside an enclosed case so that does make a bit of difference compared to open air bench's most reviewers use.

Well they improved the cooler, look at 780GTX windforce3x Ghz review.


Anyway custom cooling will change everything, all those MSI, Asus, Gb, .. customs r9-290 will sell like hotcakes

Not all Windforce 450W coolers are the same. For example, GTX780Ti GHZ's cooler is about 100-150g heavier than GTX770's one. It overall bigger
