Damn, wish I had my file server upgraded with a decent GPU and CPU to be able to participate. Been wanting to turn it into a folding/crunching machine 24/7 for TPU team while I am not doing any file work on it for a while now.

E3 Xeon chip and a R9 280 would be prime I think.

Your main rig will make short work of any crunching or folding job.... even if you only run part-time*.
*note- you will need to turn in results daily during the challenge to qualify for the prizes.

iirc- the 780Ti is one of the best, or the best, cards for folding atm and the 4770k is a beast for crunching!

Problem is, im not around my main rig, and won't be till beginning of June.

Currently 5 hours away from it. Have been for the last 2 months.

You can even crunch on a laptop, tablet, or even a cell phone. @Arjai and @yotano211 use their laptops exclusively iirc

I Crunch/Fold with an oldish Llano-based laptop from 2011. It has an A6-3400M in it, which isn't that great at stock speeds (1.4GHz base, 2.3GHz turbo), roughly similar to a Core 2 Duo E8200 in performance. Overclocked (2.3GHz, 3.0GHz) it's pretty good, close to an i3-3220 (or an i5-2540M on the mobile side), but running at that speed puts it near the thermal limit. Folding it averages 5200 PPD running 64-bit Linux; I'm not sure about crunching RAC, but I would guess ~2400 max. The iGPU is almost useless for folding, so I don't bother with it. The newer APUs probably have less CPU power, but the iGPU is much faster, so that could be worth a try.

Thats the APU I have in my laptop for school im using. Should be fine for this. If I really get into folding/crunching and I come up with some cash ill do something a bit more major.

I have an i5 3317u Ultrabook that runs WCG, every chance I get. Over night, while at the bar or coffee shop, and occasionally at work. Not supposed to but, when the boss is away...

Does a very nice job, when I let it run for long periods, 5 or more hours.

Since there is no gpu work for crunching the Techpowerup Folding@home team (28th in the world!!) would love to see some of you using your video cards to help the folding team. Some of us do both Crunching on cpu and folding on gpu. BTW high end video cards put out MAJOR ppd some of you guys have some awesome hardware that sometimes sit idle. We would love it if you would help.

My card has difficulties with some of the WUs and unlike in case of WCG I can not opt-in or opt-out for WUs in case of F@H. Sorry.

For the challenge prizes you can crunch OR fold or crunch AND fold as long as you're turning in work every day and are a member of at least one of the TPU Teams

I have started crunching on my main rig and will get it folding too in a short while but im fairly stumped by trying to get wcg running on steam os.
Does anyone know of a specific guide anywhere.

Not sure how that would work in Steam OS? Is there still a software center for installing programs in that OS?

From what I've read, Steam OS has no file manager and you can use GNOME environment for installing stuff but I'm not sure if the BOINC Manager would be available in that setup.

Perhaps this can Help? I'm a Linux Noob, too. I did manage to get it going, with some help, on Mint and on Ubuntu. Unfortunately, those computer's are in storage, right now. Boo!
