AMD Barcelona/Agena FX' TDP is 95W

95TDP is amazing for a quad core. Unless you go ULV, Intels arent even that cool. Nice move on AMD and Im sure easier for OCING with nice gains.

Clovertown TDP is 80W for most models, 120W for the fastest though. (and 50W for LV yes) Niagara (which has 8 cores) has a 60W TDP. There are dual core PowerPC's that use under 25W (so quad core would use less than 50) I'm not that impressed by 95W since about every other CPU manufacturer has more power efficient chips out there.

As for overclocking, the boards won't allow it. Barcelona isn't a desktop chip.

Intel rates their chips by what they use up in a typical setup, while AMD rates theirs by the absolute maximum the chip could ever possibly use in the worst conditions. So...i find it pretty impressive. Though Intel having an 80w quad core is extremely impressive considering they made 120w single cores that didn't even perform very well just 2 short years ago.

It would be impressive if it would be better than what other companies have to offer, however every other company has multi core offerings that use less. So how is it impressive? Also, consider that 45nm parts from Intel are coming, they will (likely) use slightly less at the same clock creating a bigger gap. The way they measure TDP isn't really relevant since TDP isn't very accurate in the first place, unless you believe that a any CPU at 2GHz can have the same TDP as the same at 2.5GHz and still be accurate. For example, my Woodcret 1.6's have a TDP of 65W, the same Woodcrests at 2.33GHz have a TDP of 65W as well. (AMD does the same)

i think it dont really matter if barcelona is good or not,with intel releasing the 45nm cores soon,its a case of too little too late imo.

amd beat intel (the giant) for a while coz intel made a mistake.now they've rectified the mistake,i dont think amd has a hope now.intel will not make the same mistake(netburst) again.

i suppose the barcelona will sate amd fanboys tho'.

Call me an old humbug but to be honest, Quadcores are going to have a very limited market in the "personal computing" sector for a while in any case, there remain insufficient supporting apps for dual core (although there is of course other multi-tasking benefits)and apparently almost two thirds of personal PC users worldwide are still using single core's, gamers see little if any improvement from dual cores (yes there are exceptions) so quadcore is IMO a serious way off from mainstream appeal.

I spose what i am saying is that for the next couple of years Quadcore does not concern me, yes I want to keep up to date with developments, technologies and performance but I personally would much rather see some more serious advances in dual core trechnology and performance from the 2 main players, I just hope they dont channel too much of their resources in a forthcoming quadcore battle and forget about the worlds mainstream users!
