Lucid and ASUS Announce Desktop PC Power Optimization

Lucidlogix (Lucid), pioneers in multi GPU virtualization technologies, and ASUS, the leader in PC solutions, today announced the integration of Lucid VirtuWatt software inside select models of ASUS desktops. VirtuWatt will automatically and seamlessly power-off discrete GPU when not required, and power-on again when needed. This dramatically minimizes power draw, maximizes system life and reduces noise levels making the ASUS ROG G20 the ideal solution for ultimate marathon gaming session.

The recently launched ASUS G20, an extremely powerful compact gaming desktop PC, which the Eco Energy Mode integrate VirtuWatt, Lucid's eco-friendly GPU virtualization technology into its new system, resulting in a more powerful, cost-efficient PC user experience.



In addition to extending overall system longevity, VirtuWatt dramatically reduces power consumption, noise and heat. This new integration of the field-proven VirtuWatt solution enables reduced power consumption, noise and heat by electrical power-down of the discrete GPU. The VirtuWatt solution seamlessly switches processing workloads between the discrete and integrated GPUs, resulting in optimal use of resources while maintaining maximal performance when required. Integration of the VirtuWatt solution includes a simple modification of the motherboard or VGA card, which is included in the VirtuWatt reference design. The technology enables gamers to do tasks without VGA performance such as downloading their favorite games without much energy consumption.

Systems running powerful games and professional applications, such Computer Aided Design (CAD), Digital Content Creation (DCC) and video editing, rely on high-performance, power-hungry discrete GPUs to handle significantly heavy loads. When the graphics processor remains idle, although it continues to draw energy from the power source, it is at this stage that VirtuWatt shuts down the discrete GPU when not in use, keeping it cool, and dramatically reducing the power draw.

so....its a shittier version of optimus? why not just use optimus? or enduro, if AMD gpus are used. discrete gpus are getting better at idling power draw, so "dramatically reduced" might equal 3-5 watts, or maybe 10 at the most.
edit: the geforce 780 idles at 10 watts. so more like 10-15 watts with powerful cards. still not seeing why this is better than nvidia or amd's own solution though.

On a single pc use I agree. Not really worth it. But if this technology is used in a workplace that utilizes high-end gpus, then this could be a big money saver for a company as it would be 10-15watts saved multiplied by tens or hundreds of PCs.

Virtu LMAO every time i try it it's only made the power usage go up, and it's been 10-15w extra not less.. O yeah after some time if they want upgraded software will they have to buy it ? lol.
