Gigabyte Exec Confirms GeForce GTX 880 September Launch

A Gigabyte executive, in an interview with Expreview on the sidelines of ChinaJoy Game Developers Conference, confirmed that NVIDIA will launch its next-generation GeForce GTX 880 high-end graphics card in September, 2014. He said that in context of disclosing that his company is working on a custom-design card based on the new chip, named GTX 880 G1.Gamer. The new card will be designed with a massive cooler capable of handling thermal loads as high as 650W. What this means is, with its fans spooled down, the cooler will be able to passively cool the GPU over a wider temperature band, regardless of the GPU load. The fans will begin to kick in only at a higher temperature. Based on the "Maxwell" architecture, the GTX 880 could step up performance-per-Watt metrics for NVIDIA.

The original posting says that the new cooler is actually just a revised WindForce3 - the one proclaiming 450W dissipation (seems to work fine on my GHz Ed card), and the TDP of the GTX 880 is touted as 225W (at stock clocks presumably), so I'm guessing a liquid cooler won't be mandatory.

The entire heat sink is going to be made of silver

Somehow I'd like them more to spin always slowly and never reach those high temperatures.

The cooler will be big, and I'm expecting GM104/GM204 to have lower TDP than GK104, although they're both based on 28 nm. So the cooler is probably designed to work fan-less upto a set temperature threshold (much like ASUS Strix). I don't think beyond that threshold the fans will blast up at high-speeds, but only gradually climb (20% at threshold, with linear increase).

So I gather by the lower TDP and higher specs my first assumption is correct, a larger chip with more shaders running a lower frequency, more work on power consumption tech to shut down more parts of the core, and possibly remove some redundant hardware. I would expect 20-30% higher performance with the increased shader count and better process yields.

Most likely, the point of this is to improve core to core while improving power consumption all at once. We can expect this to beat out the 780ti by quite a margin depending on the clock speeds and if its true that it will contain 3k+ cuda cores.

I think either way, these are going to be some cool cards and will perform as such. We can only now wait to see the actual card in action (Soon enough we shall get full details since its slated for release next month).

Don't hold your breath, its going to depend if they actually drop the price of the 780ti. If it performs at least on par with the 780ti and at lower power consumption (I'm assuming worst case) then its going to be priced at least pretty close to it. But based off some of the price drops seen recently we can guess 600 would not be a stretch. On that same note though some expect the price (Rumors mostly) to be around $450 so if thats the case that would be a huge deal!
