MSI X99S Gaming 9 AC Motherboard Teased

MSI released teaser shots of its upcoming flagship socket LGA2011-2 motherboard, designed for Core i7 "Haswell-E" processors, featuring DDR4 memory interfaces. Called the X99S Gaming 9 AC, as its name suggests, the board is based on Intel X99 Express chipset. It appears to feature eight DDR4 DIMM slots, supporting quad-channel DDR4 memory; five PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, with the ability to drive 4-way SLI and CrossFireX; storage connectivity that includes one or more M.2 slots, and SATA-Express, apart form eight SATA 6Gb/s ports. Networking includes 802.11 ac WLAN, Killer E2200 gigabit Ethernet, eight (or more) USB 3.0 ports, and a boat-load of overclocker-friendly features.

The article says LGA2011-2. That is incorrect as that was Ivy Bridge-E (Sandy Bridge-E was LGA2011-1). Haswell-E is LGA2011-3.

Not exactly. Sandy-Bridge-EP (Core-i7) and Ivy-Bridge-EP (Core-i7) did use the same socket LGA2011 (or LGA2011-1), they even run on the same motherboards with the same chipset (X79). The socket LGA2011-2 is only for the Ivy-Bridge-EX Xeons (Xeon-E7-4xxx). And now there is LGA2011-3 for those new Haswell-EP chips (Core-i7).

I am blown away by that motherboard and its looks!!!

I am still hoping MSI releases another Big Bang edition but that maybe my next choice when I grab my Haswell-E chip.

Which Haswell-E processor are you going to buy?

As for this MSI motherboard I can't quite see it well enough but of what I can see I do like. I'm not sure what X99 / LGA2011-3 motherboard I will buy but I'm guessing it will either be Asus or Gigabyte. Still I will carefully go over the feature set and look for something that makes a motherboard stand out from the rest.

As for processor I'll probably just go with the entry level Core i7 5820K this time around. If the mid level 5930K would have been 8 cores then I probably would have gone for that.

I am going for the 5930k, I need the PCIE lanes for gaming plus I want the cores for all my other work. I would have gone for the lower one but since they removed the extra lanes I decided I had to stick with the middle ground. The board I want is hopefully they will make a new version of this board but from what I see on this board its a nice alternative. I like Asus, and in fact run the Crosshair V-Z at the moment however with the pricing of the boards on the X79 the board I would want would cost alot more than the equivalent MSI from what I have seen online and in stores.

Plus that last round Big Band Edition had by far my favorite looks of any board (Im guessing you can see why in the link I provided lol) along with a robust feature set.

I am with you though, I was really hoping for the 8 core to be the mid and top for this generation but of course that was not where our luck landed. I had the feeling it was going to be this way (That or I was actually thinking it would go 4, 6, and 8 core) but either way this will suffice. I can not bring myself to spend the 1k for a processor even if I have the money.

Actually NVM - apparently they are compatible. though I might need to scale back my OC a little as Haswell-E uses less voltage....

actually my bad..... Im reading a year old article about the X99 chipset, In the article it states that X99 would be compatible with SB-E & IB-E, Then they released another article after that which states that it wont support SB-E or IB-E due to voltage differences & memory controllers. They should have edited the first article where it states that the older generation of CPUs are supported but i suppose they left it there just so their website could get more hits.

I'll probably see if i could grab a sabertooth motherboard on ebay for cheap as this 3930k still has too much horsey under the hood to give up. Im not sold on the ROG series of boards though with that in mind, the Sabertooth mobo isnt exactly cheap either.

Does anyone know the official release day of Haswell-E ?

Im still using an NVIDIA nForce 790i with a Q9450. Nothing wrong with my setup except the motherboard which hit the upgrade wall around two years ago so I really want to move on now.
