AMD production manager Devon Nekechuk, speaking at the company's 30 Years of Graphics event, disclosed that all AMD GPUs based on the Graphics CoreNext architecture will support DirectX 12, Microsoft's next generation multimedia API. The company is already up-to-date on the DirectX feature-level support, with support for DirectX 11.2. The company isn't drumming that up too loud, probably because it's developing an ecosystem for its own/competing AMD Mantle 3D API.

Correct. HD7xxx were the first GCN powered chips. That's basically because D3D12 doesn't really bring anything new to the table except less overhead, just like Mantle.

Quite old news. It was announced a few months ago that all CGN cards and all fermi-kepler-maxwell cards will support DX12

And by the time we see any decent games that actually take advantage of DX12 any card out now will be too slow to really play them.

Does DX12 come with any new graphical features or is it just a more efficient API?

iirc it's mainly addition of "Mantle like" features in it (woohoo innovation at its finest ) but i can be mistaken

I get better minimums in Thief although there is not much difference but every bit counts right ?.

Well... microsoft will probably do MANTLE better than AMD does. So, we should wait and see the DX12 results.

Hell id rather it be an efficient Api. Mantle is very good for the gaming market if Amd starts doing alot of rd on it.

Kinda true, but they could of said nothing and just expected everyone to buy new cards. I know i wont be buying a DX12 and now thanks to AMD my card will support DX12 as i don't know if nVidia would of said any thing about this and just keep it on the down low.

They could of said shit in the end regardless but they didn't which to me is a plus

That is up for debate if its dx12 has mantle like features or is it mantle that has dx12 like features? Since MS been working on it for 4 years now can't say which.

well AMD came up with these first ... so it's AMD, i highly doubt the story behind involved spying and stealing of "upcoming features" both feature might have the same objective but probably different mean to achieve it, altho Mantle being open MS could also had a share of data from AMD... after all AMD is not a opponent to MS.

I'm really hoping DX12 is quickly adopted. I want developers to actually use new technology instead of clinging to the old crap they have used since 2007.

Hell id rather it be an efficient Api. Mantle is very good for the gaming market if Amd starts doing alot of rd on it.

DX11 is pretty damn efficient compared to DX9, to the problem is nobody really bothered to use it. Up until Mantle's release OpenGL was probably the most efficient API on the market, and with the exception of John Carmack nobody really gave a shit.

Nvidia has said they have worked with Microsoft to get DirectX 12 designed, and I believe they said it should support Keplar and on, pending Microsoft making any major changes.

So thats mean my A10-7850k Kaveri would support Directx12 too?

It's based on GCN if I remember correctly, so yes.

well AMD came up with these first ... so it's AMD, i highly doubt the story behind involved spying and stealing of "upcoming features" both feature might have the same objective but probably different mean to achieve it, altho Mantle being open MS could also had a share of data from AMD... after all AMD is not a opponent to MS.

Neither of them created anything new. S3 and 3Dfx were using low level API's long before Mantle, and Nvidia even had their own low-level API actively marketed and in use (*hint* it has to do with Physics). They were ditched for a reason--they just don't work for game development. Yes, you can squeeze tons of performance out of hardware by coding down to the metal, but it's a nightmare compared to most modern game design, and it locks you into a certain hardware configuration. This means you are basically shunning 40-60% of the market at any given time.
