ASUS Rampage V Extreme Is the Company's Flagship Motherboard

Every company has a flagship product or service. ASUS, which started out as a motherboard brand, has its newest, the ROG Rampage V Extreme. Based on the Intel X99 Express chipset, the board drives Core i7-5000 "Haswell-E" HEDT processors. It begins with a high-current 8-phase CPU VRM that draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX, 8-pin EPS, and 4-pin ATX connectors. The CPU socket is wired to eight DDR4 DIMM slots, and five PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots (one of which features a lane bypass).

Storage connectivity on the Rampage V Extreme includes 12 SATA 6 Gb/s, one SATA-Express, and an M.2 with PCIe 2.0 x4 physical layer. Other connectivity includes SupremeFX 2014 audio, Intel-made gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 ac WLAN with Bluetooth 4.0, fourteen USB 3.0 ports (ten on the rear panel, four by headers), and high-current USB 2.0 ports so your USB gaming peripherals never run out of juice. The usual complement of ROG-exclusive features are present.

Prob around the $500 range, but no I have not heard anything definitive.

I think it has 2 Sata-express ports, as can be seen in the third picture.

Ugly... nothing new in design. Looks like old mobos for example - R4BE with red colors. Also no matte PCB (looks like that in the screens), no RED parts in the PCB like M7 series ....

ASUS X99-E WS looks way stronger in power part. For me WS will be better than Ramapage Extreme, but we will see.

People often say ROG stuff is overpriced crap, but the fact is, these Rampage boards are awesome. I have an ancient Rampage II Gene and despite few glitches and tricks (mostly annoying cold boot problems), it's by far the best board i've ever had. The next one will most certainly be a ROG again. Preferably enthusiast grade again and in Gene size format.

You lose the warranty of your CPU if you use it in this Mainboard.

CPU socket has more contacts than allowed by Intel.

WS is also great but it's obviously more for workstation purposes and less for overclocking. Though I doubt there will be much difference in price, they are both flagships and not meant for most people.

It's in german, but you can look at the pictures anyway. They claim that ASUS is willing to take over the warranty for the CPU in case that something happens.

The Hasewell-E CPUs have a few unused contacts, ASUS however has found out that they can increase the voltage IF they use those additional contacts. Intel doesn't like the idea.

A CPU that has been used in such an "special ASUS socket" can be clearly identified, as the normally unused contacts on the CPU have marks on their surface after being put in such a socket.

Look fantastic. This year ASUS boards look best and offer everything.
It would be nice if ASUS launch R5E Black Edition sooner, Rampage III Extreme BE, Rampage IV Extreme BE was for buyers who build platform 6 months before new Xtreme Chipset, that's stupid.
Many people didn't pay attention on them waiting new platform.
If they want should launch max for 3-4 months.

Lot of people don't really care about the new platform, because is in "beta" status. Yeah, great with the 8 core processors, but next year at same time will have Broadwell-E - better CPUs and no more shitty bioses and much better ram... at the moment is just meh.

Also, R5BE for sure won't come anytime soon. May be for Broadwell-E is possible, but even then it's not 100% sure... R3BE also came at the end of X58's life.

I don't think it'll be that early,I read somewhere that Intel does upgrades in the extreme department every 2 yrs due to the businesses that purchase their Xeon line.

Nope. It's high-end platform. In next 3 to 4 years - X99 will be the same, but memory/cpu market will WAY better, so yes - Haswell-E is meh in lot of ways.

Intel only launched 2 CPU generation with both X58 and X79 (first Tock, then Tick). Both lasted 3 years until the next platform released. Based on that I believe it's quite likely we will get a new platform with Skylake-E. Something new is always around the corner.
