ASUS Republic of Gamers Announces the G551 and G771 Gaming Laptops

ASUS today announced the Republic of Gamers (ROG) G Series G551 and G771 gaming laptops. These new G Series models represent a performance leap over their predecessors, with up to Intel Core i7 processors and enthusiast-grade NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics for the horsepower to drive today's games smoothly at their highest settings. The G Series laptops exhibit their visual prowess with wide-angle IPS displays, and provide gamers with Full HD visuals. There's also 4K/UHD-ready Trinity Display output for multi-monitor gaming or multitasking.

The distinctive G Series design features a matte-black brushed-aluminum finish with red diamond-cut edges, and bears an illuminated ROG logo on the lid. The keyboards are designed especially for gamers, and the almost-silent cooling system efficiently removes heat with minimum fan noise.

The new G Series laptops are powered by up to Intel Core i7 processors for the performance required by the latest gaming titles; while enthusiast-grade NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M/860M graphics with Microsoft DirectX 11 provide sharper visuals and smoother in-game animations. I have to agree with you here. 15" and 17" gaming laptops in 2014/2015 should come with 1080P PLS/IPS displays minimum. It should not be an upgrade option; it should be the baseline.

It's a choice people...

Few other gaming notebooks have been using 2880x1620 or 3200x1800, or even 4K on Asus GX500.
Not that it'll be really usable though...

Enthusiast chips are things like the 7970m and the geforce 780m. the 850m is NOT, by any means, an enthusiast chip.

860M is a rebranded 770M and should be enough to play most games at high settings at 1080p. For demanding games (Battlefield 3/4, Far Cry 3, Metro: LL) you may need to drop AA to 2x or turn it off to stay above 40FPS at 1080p. I do wish ASUS gave more options for higher-end chips but these two new G-series laptops are considerably thinner than previous models and they likely hit a limit with cooling potential in the smaller chassis.

I'm expecting the power efficiency of Maxwell to provide for compelling high-end offerings in the mobile space. The 880M has a TDP of ~125W and GTX 970 has a TDP of only 145W. Nvidia could take GTX 970 and lower RAM + core clocks in order to drop the TDP to a point where it would fit inside the 120-125W TDP needed for a high-end GTX 980M. AMD has nothing that could compete with a slightly underclocked GTX 970 in the mobile space.

Asus' ROG website has always been quite out of date. Even their list of laptops still show they are selling systems with Nvidia 300m Series of video cards. What is this 2009?
