Microsoft Corp. today announced revenue of $23.20 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2014. Gross margin, operating income and diluted earnings per share ("EPS") for the quarter were $14.93 billion, $5.84 billion and $0.54 per share, respectively.

These financial results include $1.14 billion of integration and restructuring expenses, or an $0.11 per share negative impact, related to both Microsoft's restructuring plan announced in July 2014 and the ongoing integration of the Nokia Devices and Services ("NDS") business.

"We are innovating faster, engaging more deeply across the industry, and putting our customers at the center of everything we do, all of which positions Microsoft for future growth," said Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft. "Our teams are delivering on our core focus of reinventing productivity and creating platforms that empower every individual and organization."

"We delivered a strong start to the year, with continued cloud momentum and meaningful progress across our device businesses," said Amy Hood, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Microsoft. "We will continue to invest in high-growth opportunities and drive efficiencies across the organization to deliver long-term shareholder value."

Devices and Consumer revenue grew 47% to $10.96 billion, with the following business highlights:
  • Office 365 Home and Personal subscribers totaled more than 7 million, representing more than 25% sequential growth over the previous quarter.
  • Surface Pro 3 momentum drove Surface revenue of $908 million.
  • New Windows consumer licensing programs drove positive unit growth while OEM non-Pro revenue declined 1%.
  • Total Xbox console sales were 2.4 million, growing 102%, and Xbox One launched in 28 new markets.
  • Phone hardware revenue exceeded $2.6 billion with ongoing focus on execution discipline.

Commercial revenue grew 10% to $12.28 billion, with the following business highlights:
  • Server products and services revenue increased 13%, with double-digit growth for SQL Server, System Center and Windows Server.
  • Office Commercial products and services revenue grew 5% as customers transition to Office 365.
  • Commercial cloud revenue grew 128% driven by Office 365, Azure and Dynamics CRM.
  • Lync, SharePoint and Exchange, our productivity server offerings, collectively grew double-digits.
  • Windows volume licensing revenue increased 10%.

"Customers are embracing our latest technologies from Surface Pro 3 and Office 365 to Azure and SQL Server," said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer of Microsoft. "Through great execution by our sales teams and our partners, we have been able to deliver our truly differentiated value to the marketplace."

Businesses....Enterprise and business products drive the profits for Microsoft. Consumer licensing has been on a steady decline a majority of this year.

That's some "restructuring expenses", I am kinda curious what are they restructing in line with their Nokia activites?

2,4 mill XBone sales? Whyyyy? #PCMasterRace (I'm overreacting here. ;)) Revenue from Office 365, makes sense. My subscription runs out in December, so I have to start saving to renew it.

That's Xbox [1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen] sales, not Xbox one specifically. I don't think MS wants to break the number out until it catches up closer to PS4 sales.

Excellent news. I think Microsoft's existence is good, as it provides competition against the deluded Apple fanbois of the world.

Do you mean there are three generations of XB1 or do you mean they are still selling Xbox and Xbox 360?

The negativity towards Microsoft is overblown in this thread. Microsoft provides the best platform for businesses and consumers to have the best PC/server experience.

I don't agree here. I think Apple provides an extremely good mobile experience that Microsoft hasn't been able to do quite yet.

Mobile experiences aside, I really don't think Apple offers anything that cannot be somehow acquired by alternate and cheaper means. Having said that, the issues that have been plaguing the iPad seem to contradict Jobs' earlier prediction that the era of the personal computer was coming to an end (a statement he made some time in 2012 or there abouts). I just feel inclined to speak openly against an unstoppable marketing behemoth that has the potential to rip consumers off. I don't see the point in the new iMac's 5K screen when it's more or less identical to earlier versions for instance, and which tests have indicated that the GPU cannot fully utilize the 5K display; indeed not even GTX 980s in SLI could yet costs a staggering amount of money.

Yeah. iPud growth has been in decline almost since they were announced.

True, hardware isn't being sold. Should have been clearer but isn't Xbox Live still working [and creating revenue] on the first gen?

I don't know, I'm not into consoles just PCs. :rockout:

You had me at the first part (MS is absolutely the single best consumer/business platform), lost me on the second, because my WindowsPhone 8.1 is phenomenal, intuitive, and powerful. I have an iPhone for work that is so non-intuitive, and really, dumb as shit compared to my WindowsPhone.

I detect a little bias here. While Windows 8 is a change for the masses, the experience on Windows phone 8 is exactly the same as windows 8 metro. Saying Windows 8 is a horrible consumer product is also saying Windows phone 8 is a horrible product. Neither of which is true. Windows 8 lacks a start menu and windows phone 8 lacks quality apps available on current phones. iOS is an extremely intuitive user interface but doesn't offer quite the level of customization and hardware selection as the other OEMs. Consumer satsifaction of iOS and the iPhone completely obvious due to the fact Apple is worth three times more than MS due primarily to iPhone sells.

Obviously we disagree on the phone aspect, but can you tell me what "quality apps" the windowsphone lacks? And exactly how many apps does a person need or can install? Really, this is an old argument from the early days of windowsphone 7, when they only started out with a "mere" 5,000 or so apps. Those days are long gone, but really, how many apps have to be provided before you get into 47 products that all do the same thing?

The tiles on WindowsPhone are easy to use and maneuver through, movement is fluid, internet zips, i have lots of storage space, and several of my apps are tied into my MS account, making whatever i do on the phone duplicated on my pc.

It's on the PC where I dont think the tiles are well suited (and so I use start 8), but underneath I think 8.1 is a very good operating system, which is why I agree strongly with the first half of the statement.

Agree to disagree, but I needed to let readers know that WindowsPhone isnt a fail, as you seemed to imply. Their market share is growing, and really not bad at all considering MS entered late and had to play catch up.

I own a Lumia 930. I have been an Apple iPhone user since 2007. The phone is not failure by any stretch of the means. There is a lack of quality apps though. There are too many developers out the making bogus apps and basically maleware. Youtube still doesn't exist as Google still doesn't support Windows phone. Furthermore, when an official developer actually creates an app for the Windows Store it's normally an internet overlay which is completely annoying. As for market share, the market share has remained flat this year.

True, hardware isn't being sold. Should have been clearer but isn't Xbox Live still working [and creating revenue] on the first gen?

I don't know, I'm not into consoles just PCs. :rockout:
