AMD today announced that qualifying purchases from participating retailers of an AMD Radeon R9 295X2, R9 290X or R9 290 graphics card will be eligible for a complimentary copy of 2K's Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth.

"I personally have enjoyed more than 500 hours of game time with the Sid Meier's Civilization franchise, and I'm thrilled by what AMD and Firaxis Games have done with the Mantle graphics API to make Beyond Earth a smooth, high-performance marvel," said Roy Taylor, corporate vice president, ISV/IHV Partner Group, AMD. "AMD believes that gamers should freely experience that remarkable development work, and our new Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth promotion offers exactly that as a 'thank you' to new AMD Radeon customers."

Collaboration between Firaxis Games and the AMD Gaming Evolved program brings deep PC optimization to Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth. That optimization can be experienced first-hand with high performance AMD Radeon R9 Series GPUs, which are ready to support empire-worthy display technologies like AMD Eyefinity and 4K UltraHD. Support for AMD CrossFire technology and an exceptional implementation of the Mantle graphics API provides discerning gamers with radical performance and effortlessly smooth gameplay.

In Civilization: Beyond Earth players lead an expedition from Earth to a new frontier, enabling them to explore and successfully colonize an alien planet. The game's storyline ventures into uncharted territory for the franchise as the game propels the evolution of human civilization into the future.

Gamers can qualify for their complimentary copy of Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth by purchasing a new AMD Radeon R9 295X2, R9 290X or R9 290 graphics card from a participating reseller starting November 6, 2014. Visit amd.com/civilizationoffer for specific terms and conditions.

Plays best on AMD Radeon
Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth is the first of many next-generation PC games that crave larger GPU framebuffers, and the AMD Radeon R9 290X 8GB answers the challenge. In performance testing, the AMD Radeon R9 290X 8GB graphics card with Mantle rendered Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth at higher frame rates than any other single-GPU graphics card. Gamers looking to secure the power of 8GB for their own rigs can do so from their favorite online retailer starting this month.

Never Settle: Space Edition
In addition to the Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth bundle, all AMD Radeon R9 295X2, R9 290X and R9 290 graphics cards are simultaneously eligible for the Never Settle: Space Edition promotion. With a qualifying purchase at participating resellers, customers can receive a Radeon Gold Reward coupon good for three free games from a catalog of more than 25 titles to choose from. This offer can be combined with the Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth promotion for a total of up to four complimentary games.

If you're playing with mantle your CPU usage is lower giving more cpu power to the AI, which is useful in the late game where the CPU is your main bottleneck.

Even Civilization V needs enough horsepower to render smooth mainly at the online part. And as human_error already said the CPU needs to run very fast at large games. After the latest patch Civ V become unstable again but only for online gaming. Hosting one game needs a fast internet and good rig - I guess.

I really love the Civilization franchise. It's great to see AMD bundling this with some of their cards.

Exactly, at 4K it gets a whole 1FPS more with mantle.

At 1080 the cards that benefit don't matter enough to make a difference, and the cards that don't don't matter. Minimum frame rates show a bit more improvement, just enough to make Mantle worth using, and for the money it seems that using Mantle for this game with a 290X at 4K will provide a meh, gaming experiance, and do OK at 1440 unless you have a 980, then use the 980.

My post wasn't about Mantle, but you saying Civ BE doesn't benefit from high power graphics cards ;)

This is a tangent, but with everything turned off it's doing a steady 60FPS at 1680 x 1050 on my setup. It really is a flexible engine.

Now that is good to know, while I run my turns IRL and accumulate money to upgrade some purchases like this have seemed worthless if all I could get was 15FPS

It was a jab at them for making a RTS game so pretty and shallow seeming that it needs Mantle to run correctly.
