Originally expected to launch its mid-range GeForce GTX 960 graphics card on the sidelines of the 2015 International CES, in early January, NVIDIA is now expected to launch the card on the 22nd of the month. The card will be based on NVIDIA's new GM206 silicon, that's based on its "Maxwell" architecture. Among its known features are a 128-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, 2 GB of memory, and significantly lower power draw compared to its predecessor. The card will draw power from a single 6-pin PCIe power connector. It's expected to be priced around the $200 mark.

I'm just interested in GTX 970, but the price should fall a bit more. The main issue are all the complaints over coil whining which seems to be quite problematic with GTX 970...

Do I upgrade from my 660 to this..? Hmm. Maybe keep saving up for that 970 I keep eyeballing.

^This. But if the pricing of the 960 is really close to what was leaked (as seen on the customs papers in India), then I may reconsider.

Honestly 4GB is te new minimum. This card will be powerful enough to use it. A 4GB variant at $220-$250 would be an amazing card.

I doubt it. I don't think GTX 960 will be much faster than HD7970. And those came with 3GB and they work just fine for resolutions they are capable of running anyway.

Based on a few reports I've been reading, it looks like it's related to poor quality PSUs more than anything, so really, just get a good, high quality PSU with low ripple and good voltage stability and you shouldn't have issues.

Here's some more reading for the curious: https://np.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/2pu3to/discussion_gtx_970s_coil_whine_and_your_psu/cn03feh

Enough with the 128bit whining already! I'm almost certain you have no clue as to what that spec actually stands for or how it might influence performance... So stop bitching about it and wait for the reviews!

Trust me, it does. 256bit is a very minimum today (because with framebuffer compresion you get roughly 384bit effective). With 128bit you get only 256 effective, which is still not all that much. And for 1920x1080 and beyond, you kinda need that already... That's why.

@ZeDestructor
People with GTX 970 don't exactly have shitty PSU's... Though I have a high end Corsair HX750 and I too get occasional coil whine on HD7950, mostly in very old games only. Haven't had any in latest games.

I've tried the EVGA 970 FTW and the MSI Gaming 4G cards with a SuperFlower Golden King 750W Platinum PSU and they whine like crazy on some games (they can be heard across the room). But on most games and apps they are a lot quieter, within a reasonable level.
Using vsync didn't help with the noisy games. I'm not sure what is the problem with these cards, but it's very real and it hasn't been resolved yet.

My MSI 970 doesn't whine at all /shrugs

But anyway, this card should be fab little 1080P trooper with excellent perf per watt.

I've got a Corsair HX750 also and a MSI GTX 970 Gaming card and I haven't run across any coil whine yet. In fact the card is pretty quiet overall. It just seems to be luck of the draw with the coil whine issue.

No disrespect for those in the know, but this card does not feature a GPU capable of going beyond 1080p at full details regardless of the memory bus width. Wider memory bus means higher costs because of lower chip yields, and a 1080p midrange card does not need to render 1600p+, it needs to be affordable and do well in its domain, which the 128bit bus is more than good enough for. At the end of the day, the thing that matters is actual, useful memory throughput, and how much of it the GPU can cope with.

"oh, the 960 is 128 bit? ITS CRAP!"
I seriously LOL at everyone who says this. because bits are all that matter, right? the same kind of people that would fall for amd's "the 290x is 512 bit, so its better!" advertisements. ignore the fact that the 980, which is 256 bit, is faster than the 290x. ignoring the fact that the geforce 860m, effectively an underclocked 750ti, is faster than the 770m, a 192 bit GPU. yeah, bits are all that matter.
my guess? the same people who fall for all the marketing hype "OOOOH! a phone with 8 cpu cores?!? that is SOOOO much better than my quad core phone!" the same people who fell for the "sega 32x is 32 bit, so its better" or "atari jaguar is 64 bit, its WAY batter than the SNES. just ignore the fact the games look no better"

when will people learn that bits do NOT necessarily mean better performance? the 960 looks to be a cheap, low power GPU that is perfect for 1080p gameplay. considering that half the market is below 1080p, this card is pretty sweet sounding. needs little power, perfect for, say, an alienware x51, or some other tiny box, without breaking the bank, yet can play 1080p perfectly.

Since when did bit rate matter with the newer cards? Look at the old GPUs with 258 and up and tell me they perform better than the newer cards and have better memory bandwidth.

good thing this GPU is meant for 1080p, not 1680p.

Probably nothing good. why on earth would you plug in a gpu when the computer was ON?

It's almost like you shouldn't plug stuff in when the computer is ON.......

My eyes are bleeding :p

Yeah for sure it's a bad idea to plug anything except disks while your computer is up and running.

Anyway, I'll wait for tests. Only real benches can prove its placement on the market.

Judging by what aaa111 has posted I don't think they were expecting such a large jolt!
