Ahead of its launch, and after teasing it early last week, EVGA showed off its flagship single-GPU graphics card, the GeForce GTX 980 Classified Kingpin Edition. Based on a meatier version of the company's ACX 2.0 cooling solution, the card features clear acrylic cutouts around its shroud, rather than a frosty translucent one, featured on its GTX 780 Ti based predecessor.

It features a massive 10-phase VRM that draws power from two 8-pin and one 6-pin PCIe power connectors, which in addition to stabilizing your record-seeking overclock, power a defrosting circuit that keeps key areas of the PCB warm enough to prevent frosting, when cooling with subzero solutions, such as liquid nitrogen. The other big card is the GeForce GTX 970 FTW, the company's top-tier card based on NVIDIA's second fastest GPU. The card features a strong VRM that draws power from a combination of 6-pin and 8-pin connectors. It features a standard-size ACX 2.0 cooler, and a back-plate cools memory chips on that side.

Shouldn't a K|NGP|N version coming with a LN2 pot preinstalled?

10 phases means that this VRM is actually new and probably an 8+2 design. All the other Classifieds used a 14+2 phase VRM based on the EVGA E-power 2.0 VRM design.

So we have a card with a weaker VRM and no LN2 pot? Sounds a lot like a card K|NGP|N would choose to chase WRs...

now high end card size is 3/4 of motherboard :D:D

and for highest level i expect more premium things, like metal shroud or something

If they have an 8+2 setup instead of a 14+2 setup it's better. An 8 phase VRM has better voltage stability than a doubled 7 phase. Also if they used even half way decent MOSFETs this 8 phase VRM should have the same if not large current capability. EVGA has been recycling the same VRM since 2013 even and I suspect that they just never had the time to make a new one.
ASUS recently showed off a 500A 8 phase VRM that's a whole 100A more than what the 780Ti K|NGP|N card had on it's 14 phase VRM.

The shroud is metal.

I'd like to point out a correction on the title. I believe what you saw was the GTX 970 FTW+ and not the EVGA GTX 970 FTW. the normal GTX 970 FTW has two 6 pin PCI-E power connections but the GTX 970 FTW+ has a 6 pin and 8 pin connections and 6 power phases

I know it is a supervilllian name, and chosing a criminal reference as a gamers name like that for a part speaks of poor taste and no way I am going to write it the ganglands way he or they want to write it! For those wondering WTF I am doing here :)

Kingpin refers to one of the world's best overclockers (a.k.a Vince Lucido). You'll see that most of the world's famous overclockers adopt names like this. On a similar note there is a company called kingpin skateboarding.

Let's look at the dictionary here for the definition:

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/kingpin:

1. the most important person in an organization
2. the crucial or most important feature of a theory, argument, etc
3. (Mechanical Engineering) a pivot pin that provides a steering joint in a motor vehicle by securing the stub axle to the axle beamAlso called (Brit): swivel pin
4.
(Bowls & Bowling) tenpin bowling the front pin in the triangular arrangement of the ten pins
5. (Bowls & Bowling) (in ninepins) the central pin in the diamond pattern of the nine pins

I can't speak for Vince but I would say the name fits definition 2 or 4 or maybe both. These definitions for the word existed long before the Marvel character came into existence.

Ok, so he's the king of the pins, right? Like bridging pins to reset BIOS! hahaha!

Ok, so it is multiple, I did that checking but supposed that someone in "da scene" would choose it for those typical over the top playernames, not engineering, but at least I learned something and that is just great! so Thanks!
