It seems that everything is shaping up nicely with the OLED based keyboard. The company blog mentiones a planned November 30th release date. The price also get pinned down at US$ 1564. That is a tad bit more than we were told at CeBIT (US$ 1490). If you want that Optimus Maximus, you better keep your eyes peeled on their website. Only 200 pieces will be constructed monthly, with a ramp to 400 units in January. A countdown to preorder will be placed on the Art. Lebedev website today or tomorrow.

Whats the big advantage to this keyboard? Thats what I want to know. 1600 dollars for a keyboard is just stupid. Only the rich will want one of these puppies.

The keyboard has OLED's under each key they light up the keyboard. So say you would like to map the S key to M the LED's would show the S in the M key without having to take off the keys from your keyboard.

this also allows games to run more smoothly. The keys that are used in the game are the only ones that are lit. So in fps games basically only the left side of the keyboard is lit

How? It wouldnt improve performance. So I assume your talking about hitting the right key...and since you dont look at the keyboard while playing (christ i dont even look when im not gaming...just touch type :D! ) it doesnt offer that much greatness.

The changing of the keys can be fun and make things easier, but its unnecessary. Im not saying its a crap idea, im just saying the cost outweighs the benefit offered.

yeah i was talking about hitting the right key. You can also map images to keys if you like so you can have cool icons as keys but its still way too much to purchase in my opinion

im sorry but this keyboard while looking very cool is a bad design,
would it have been much easier and cheaper to make super thin lcd display the size of the keyboard that would go underneath clear keys and then have a program similar to lcd studio to change the layout of the keys by changing the image on lcd

in fact that sounds like such a good idea i think i might patten it

Hmm, the only thing I can think of thats wrong with your idea is the fact that LCDs would use a heap more power than a LED. Which means that you couldnt get a wireless model...
Think of it sorta like an MP3 Player, they have LCD screens with ALOT less screen area than would be used in your keyboard design, and their batteries are drained as a result of lots of LCD use (eg using the backlight or watching a movie). Ipod batteries only last like 10 hours, and thats without overusing the LCD by just listening to music. So you definately wouldnt be able to apply it to a wireless model.

One other consideration would be when you get angry, I tend to hit the keyboard lol. The LCD would shatter instantly. This fragility means that its more expensive to ship (requires better packaging). Also, LEDs have a longer lifespan than LCDs, and are easier to replace.
