I really dont care about R9 380x ot what ever its going to be called, I want the full chip R9 390X.

Price dont matter at all, if it costs 500+, 800+ dollars, I dont care I want it. I dont care about heat, i dont care about power consumption, just get me then damn chip.

I keep looking at the comments you make & it just blends so well with your avatar pic :rockout:

I'm not so sure they'll just rebrand R9-290X into R9-380X... After all, AMD's people were talking 380 specifically when they were mentioning new GPU. We'll see, but would be strange for such info to come from AMD directly and be wrong at the same time.

You can bet your a**, that they will simply rebrand everything below 390/390X (or whatever they will call them).

It simply makes little sense to design new cores, if proven ones that perform just fine are out there already. And its not like we're shifting to 20/14nm anytime soon, so there's that aswell.

Is it just me or does anyone suspect there is still more to Hawaii than we know. Possibly fully unlocked 3072 cores? Do keep in mind Hawaii was the first huge chip from amd ever so to release it with disabled units to Improve yield is very likely.

It might just be you. The whole 3072 core/48 CU Hawaii was a hoax that stemmed from a post by 8Pack (OcUK staff member). There is a possibility that AMD could rework the chip, but why bother? And if Hawaii had unused cores, wouldn't you think they'd have released either to combat the GTX 980 or add sales impetus over the busiest sales period of the year - the holiday season.

Hawaii was a year old when Nvidia dropped their GM 204. If AMD couldn't have improved yield in a year their process engineers must be complete rubbish. GK 110 is over 25% larger than Hawaii, and Nvidia managed SKU's based on the full die 8 months after Titan debuted. I'm inclined to believe AMD's process guys aren't rubbish.

Whatever happens AMD's new generation 3xx series will kill off the 970/980 and cripple resale value. I personally think it was a bad idea to buy a 970 or 980 knowing the 3xx series is due very soon.

My 290X has served me well and I get 980 performance. I get 15,000 3D marks (11) around the same as a 980, with load temps at 69-70 degrees and it runs silent. A lot of people still judge the 290X on early stock cooler reviews, with a decent non reference cooler the temps are good.

So when you think about it, Nvidia has released 2 generations since the 290X came out, and the 290X can still match 980 performance, sure the NVidia cards use less power but that's about it, not worth getting rid of a 290X, I'm going to transition from a 290X to 390X and I feel like I've had good value from that choice over the long term.

Here is my 3D mark 11 score with small overclock to 1090Mhz, CPU @4.7Ghz 15,443

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/7461823 i5-3570k @ 4.8, GTX690 (a 3 year old card at this point). Scores the same as your 290x. Tell me again how the 290x has any business being mentioned alongside nVidia's CURRENT arch when it can't even compete with their Kepler series.

Come on now... let's just start being realistic.

4k @ 60Hz makes my eyes hurt, so that's not my usage case. Hence I wouldn't see any benefit to the 290x over the 690, a 3 year old card. Hopefully the 380/390x fixes that, but it will probably just lower prices on another 980 so I can go tri-SLI!

I'm kind of locked into G-Sync for a while now too. It's too good to give up now; I sure hope panels with "FreeSync" start becoming available for AMD users because, let me tell you, you are missing out.

And dammit, AMD, get some sort of streaming handheld put together. The SHIELD is amazing. Don't fanbroil me here, but my SHIELD has changed how I play my PC games. It's turned it into a far more... inclusive hobby.

Okay, back on topic. AMD might announce some new cards that may beat the current mid-tier-being-passed-off-as-top-tier nVidia cards. I see nV countering with the full GM200 silicon, effectively releasing the Terminator 2 fence clinging scene for AMD's market share...

Let's hope I'm wrong. Competition is a wonderful thing.

Wow, that's one hell of a hating. :D

For your information, AMD is working on a brand new CPU architecture which will be revealed later next year.

And for your information again, I did some extensive research on what my next configuration would be and guess what.... the most optimised solution would be to go ALL-AMD.

The question remains only to do it now or to wait a year or two. With 4K monitor, etc.........
My not sure why you felt my response was directed to you... it wasn't.

Just that many folks here are driving this thread with some miraculous hope that this next 300 Series on 28nm has much promise of being some huge bombshell. I think today news confirms that. As to upcoming designs on a new process I still see possibilities.

By "putting finishing touches on" they mean trying to figure out a way to not have to sell the cards with it's own dedicated mini nuclear power supply and refigeration system, right?

Well, that cooler had to cool two R9-290 GPU's, I think for a single GPU, the approach could be less "big". I'm guessing WindForce3X or Tri-X coolers should be fairly enough for a single latest GPU. Probably. Otherwise I'll have some problems re-arranging my tiny case for two closed loop coolers. There is place at the back, but it all depends on the shape of the radiator...
