Thanks to several factors, including a lower value of the dollar, Microsoft throwing in their $3-per-copy operating system, and production delays, the $100 OLPC project will now cost nearly double that figure per laptop. The asking price is now $175 per laptop. We are seeing production delays because the OLPC project needs $3 million USD to begin production of their laptop. While they have offered their laptop to several countries, few have actually followed through with the project. The founder of the OLPC project hopes that orders from Peru and Russia will allow them to start production by October 2007.

not too bad though, its still cheap as hell. but considering you can get a more powerful one for around 400 to 500 dollars, it doesnt make sense anymore.

that will happen only in Nigeria and after they will receive their $175 laptops, they will stop using internet cafes and will have ability to steal ur CC# 24/7 (before they were stealing only during internet cafe operating hours)

because the OLPC project needs $3 million USD to begin
Is this serious?? Only $3m? Can't be so little. And if it is... it just goes to show how much FREE ADVERTISING OLPC has got... much more than 10x this figure from all the news and websites talking about OLPC. However, this also shows how nobody politically is supporting the concept. Because $3m is less than the cost of a carpark, or 1 mile of freeway, or the rent on a large office or factory. If, politically, the project was repected, $3m would have been found from small change.

I DO WISH THIS FORUM WOULD STFU ABOUT OLPC. It always brings the same discussion, arguments and counterarguments. It's as through we are using it as a news filler. It is NO LONGER news. And it is not bringing any original discussion not already posted on the forum months ago.
