On Monday, Microsoft Corp. announced its plans to launch Windows 10 on July 29 with global fan celebrations, joint efforts with thousands of retailers, including all Microsoft store locations, a new global advertising campaign, and a new year-long initiative to celebrate people and organizations making a difference around the world. Available for the first time as a free upgrade, Windows 10 delivers a fast and familiar experience that is more secure and automatically up-to-date. Featuring new innovations like Cortana, Microsoft Edge and Xbox integration, Windows 10 is the best Windows ever.

"Windows 10 was built to empower people to do great things. We are thrilled to celebrate the launch of Windows 10 with our fans," said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Windows and Devices Marketing at Microsoft. "We'll mark the launch of Windows 10 by celebrating the people and organizations that upgrade the world every day - and by helping them do more in their communities."

Windows fans have helped shape Windows 10, with 5 million Windows Insiders providing valuable feedback. The Windows Insiders will be the first to receive Windows 10 and are invited to join Windows 10 fan celebrations in 13 cities around the world, including Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing, New Delhi, Dubai, Nairobi, Berlin, Johannesburg, Madrid, London, Sao Paolo, and New York City. Fan celebrations will offer hands-on opportunities, experiential demos, entertainment and opportunities to meet the Windows team.

Microsoft stores will celebrate the launch of Windows 10 in more than 110 stores in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. In select Microsoft stores, fan celebrations will feature Windows 10 pop-up demo experiences, prizes, giveaways and more. Microsoft stores are committed to delivering outstanding choice, value and service, including Answer Desk services and free in-store workshops that will help people learn how to get the most out of Windows 10.

Retailers worldwide, including Best Buy, Bic Camera, Croma, Currys/PC World, Elkjop, Incredible Connection, Jarrir, Media Markt, Staples, Yamada, Yodobashi, Wal-Mart, and many more, will introduce programs to help people easily upgrade. Tech Bench services will provide support for those upgrading to Windows 10, data migration services to help people move files from old PCs to new PCs, and experience stations where people can try out Windows 10.

Global advertising campaign celebrates a more human way to do
A new global advertising campaign for Windows 10 will celebrate the newest generation and invites people to join a new era with us. July 20 in the U.S. and July 29 globally, the first wave of TV and digital ads will highlight how Windows 10 delivers a more human way to do - brought to life with features like Windows Hello and Microsoft Edge.

Upgrade Your World seeks to inspire
Upgrade Your World is a new year-long initiative to celebrate those who inspire and empower others, led by Microsoft's vision to help people achieve more through technology and in celebration of the Windows 10 launch.

Microsoft will partner with 10 global and 100 national nonprofits in the year-long initiative to help them upgrade the world. A total $10 million cash investment will be made in support of their missions and to promote awareness of their causes.

The participating global nonprofits are CARE, Code.org, Keep a Child Alive, Malala Fund, Pencils of Promise, Save the Children, Special Olympics, The Global Poverty Project, and The Nature Conservancy. Microsoft will work with these organizations on projects and initiatives to upgrade the world, through a combination of technology, cash investments, and development of shared campaigns to raise awareness.

Beginning July 29, Microsoft and its partners will invite people around the world to nominate a 10th global nonprofit to participate. People are also encouraged to participate by sharing how they are doing big and small things to make an impact in their community and beyond using #UpgradeYourWorld.

In addition to these global partners, Microsoft will join its partners and fans in September to select 10 nonprofits in each of 10 countries - Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States - to also receive cash investments and technology to help them upgrade the world in their local communities.

Microsoft is also giving employees worldwide an extra day off to volunteer in their community at any time within the next year. Thousands of those employees will volunteer to upgrade their communities on July 29 in honor of the Windows 10 launch.

Here's to hoping Microsoft gets the launch right. Give people what they want and the masses will stay with Windows. When I go to upgrade my Windows 7 system and Windows 8.1 system give me choices. Give me an ISO so I can do a fresh install or install fresh later. Let me upgrade in place if I want. Make sure that ISO includes a key so I can install later without hassle. Verify my keys up front, whatever. Just make it easy.

Cool.

I don't think ISO availability will be problem given that we can get several past and current versions from Microsoft directly already.

I've heard they are only launching it. Actual availability will probably come in October 2015...
Ummm...no? It's literally going to be available on July 29th. There's no "soft launching" with software. It's either available or it isn't. Perhaps you're thinking about the later launch date of Windows 10 mobile?

Either way, I'm quite excited for the update. I've been running the Insider Build in Hyper-V since it first became available and the last month or so has been incredible. This is pretty much what windows 8 should have been - the capability of running the Universal Apps in a windowed instance, instead of being stuck on 100% full screen is a game changer for those who appreciate the security benefits of a fully sandboxed application.

I just hope MS has upgraded their servers and their interconnect backend.

I read over on ArsTechnica that it's going to be a staggered launch so that the servers won't be bogged down on the launch date. Some people will get the upgrade option from day 1, others will have to wait. I'm not sure how it will work with the ISO though. I'm hoping its available off the bat.

Windows Insiders will supposedly be the first to have it unlocked and ready to rock. And yeah, staggered unlocking to keep servers from melting down.

Buy it, then you can do all of that. The free upgrade they are giving people will not.

No, windows 10 will be launching for desktops/laptops/tablets on the 29th, thought it will be staggered, and everything else like Xbox, Phones, etc. Around October I think.

Time zones are staggered all over the world anyway, so some will get it a day before others, if Microsoft sticks to it's promise of a release on the 29th.

ehhh.... considering you have to enter a valid key to download directly from M$, that could be a challenge....

I dunno. I'm an insider, but I think I'll hold off a while for any of my updating. Win7 x64 is doing great by me for now, and I'm not seeing a great need for moving to that version.

Same here. I am already getting phone calls from people going "what's Windows 10?" and the truly annoying "what happened to Windows 9?" :fear:

I didn't know Microsoft had any fans.

There must be some fans out there - if you count desktops and notebooks Microsoft still has a 90% market share. I would imagine just about everyone in that 90% at least "accepts" Windows but there certainly most be some that enjoy productivity, gaming, etc and would admit being a "fan". If you count every desktop, notebook, mobile device and electronic sausage they still have 55%. I personally use a desktop at the desk and a MacBook Pro on the couch and a Android phone out of the house. Every platform has its plus and minus but I still can't be even half as productive with the MBP or phone than the good 'ole Windows desktop.

Well I'm hearing less than stellar stories about NVIDIA drivers...

shhh the fanboys will hear you. AMD has been flawless for me on W10, but yeah nvidia dropped the ball pretty hard a few times there.

I remember the problems back with Vista release. Almost every BSOD I've seen had nv*.sys mentioned and everyone was blaming Microsoft just because it was the OS that crashed. No one was apparently bothered by the fact it was NVIDIA driver that was causing it...

And also performance. I remember how performance droppe significantly at first and then took ages for it to get past Windows XP. I hope Win10 will provide better performance over Win8.1 from the get go...

I didn't know Microsoft had any fans.

I love Microsoft's server OS's, they are brilliant at doing what they are designed for. Also I much prefer supporting Windows PC's to Mac's. For most people Windows 10 will just be Windows 8.1 with a start menu.

Tell that to Creative. I'm dead scared there won't be any drivers for my X-Fi Titanium sound card...
