Intel Moves QX6800 Quad-core Processor to New Stepping

Intel is transitioning its Core 2 Extreme QX6800 processor from the B-3 to the G-0 stepping. All new stepping CPUs have increased by 9.7 points case temperature from 54.8° Celsius to 64.5° Celsius. Intel said that the G-0 stepping requires BIOS update in order to recognize the new CPUs properly. First G-0 samples of the 2.93 GHz processor shipped on May 11. Volume availability is scheduled for July 16.

Is that case temp what intel specs as tc?

Does this mean the G-0 QX's emit ~10 degrees C more heat?

No, basically this means that the new CPUs will work without a problem at higher temps(more overclocking headroom) before thermal shutdown.

Just disable temp shutdown an stick with the slightly older stepping. I bet intel is going to ask for a premium for this minor architecture tweak.

Agreed. I was thinking it was putting off ~10C more heat when I first read this.
