Intel is Intel, what can we do.

But the fact that it was proven that it works and it works fine and they are artificially blocking it is sad.
God I hope Zen is good enough and people will start massively migrating to AMD.

A company with such an attitude deserves this sooo much.

I was expecting this. They did the same with the Pentium G3258 (Anniversary Edition), it was initially overclockable on non-Z chipsets but a year after release Intel pushed a microcode update that made the CPU BSOD when overclocked on a non-Z chipset.

That micro-code update was included in Windows Updates, which caused overclockers using the Pentium G3258 to suddenly receive a BSOD on startup for no clear reason (and on some occasions, like mine, it caused a BSOD even without overclocking). Had I known that Intel likes suddenly wrecking customers' PCs like that, I would've went with some AMD APU instead.

I wonder if Intel will push this microcode update through Windows updates as well.

Well they tried it hardware wise,i am going back to the Slot type were with some you could block a pin to get a overclock.

If intel don't want you to over clock some thing they will do their best to stop it and what @newtekie1 said would not surprise me the slightest.

And pretty soon they'll get Microsoft to push an update to Windows that will prevent it from booting with the old micro-code or an overclocked non-K processor, just like they did with the G3258...

nothing stopping them from doing this. Without adequate competition they simply set the price and go. So obviously they want you to pay for the privilege of overclocking... which makes sense business wise for them, not so much consumer wise for us. It used to be the whole draw of overclocking was getting extra performance for free... granted we also paid money for better mobos and power supplies and cooling options... Ok so it was never free. lol. But at least you didn't pay Intel any extra for it.

The hell I bought expensive motherboards, but I could still overclock the crap out of the cheap chips. Higher end motherboards gave you a bit more sure, but cheap motherboards could still get you pretty far.

What Zen needs is less absolute performace and better price/perf and watt/perf. And overclocking. €100 or so chips overclocked to spank i5's.

from http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/t...ology-for-non-k-overclocking-revealed.218601/

Repeated for those to lazy to read previous thread
The paranoid in me thinks intel will allow this to work for a while to boost sales of skylake CPU's .
Then clamp down with the connivance of Microsoft and a microcode update via win 10 update (undocumented of course ) to Disable overclocking
same as those duel core pentium G****
you know the ones that could be overclocked in win 7 and 8.1 then stopped under win 10

Enjoy it while you can

I'm glad no one is surprised. Intel has ALWAYS been shady as F. Aside from their marketing/brainwashing, they've generally directed their evilness towards AMD. Now, consumers are fair game, it seems.

I just have to shake my head and laugh anytime I hear people calling corporations "evil". Evil is a human trait, and a subjective definition at that, which is applicable to humans.

Corporations are legally people. Evil people. It's in their mandate. They are sworn to maximize profits in every way they can.

Competition is what typically limits how evil a corporation can get. The problem we have here is a virtual monopoly. So however Intel wants us to bend over and take it, we have little choice in matter. Unless we want slower old-tech power-hungry chips.

Dude, that is one of the most ill-informed and completely baseless statements I have ever seen about business. It is so ungrounded in reality and completely lacking in any kind of business or economic knowledge. And for the record, it's either a monopoly or not, and per definition of the word, it's not a monopoly. Just wow.

Either that or I've been completely trolled. LOL.

By definition a Corporation is a collective of people running a business, evil people run evil corporations.

By definition a Corporation is a collective of people running a business, evil people run evil corporations.

As a former senior manager in a Fortune 500 company, I have to say, this is so off base it's not even funny. Corporations are about making a profit, no differently than an individual business owner. Both have the same goal. There is nothing evil in that.

Incidentally, evil is way overused as a descriptor. The assumption that businesses are run by evil people is such an outsider perspective. Nearly everything you have and own and use came from a corporation. They do the manufacturing of the things we use in everyday life. They fulfill a vital role in this world. Yes there may be some amoral people that work for them them, but believe me, they are the minority.

As an owner of individual businesses, I might be able to shed some light on the potential differences. My businesses do not exist to make money. If they didn't make money they wouldn't exist for long, but making money and definitely maximizing profit isn't the goal. I pay very little attention to it. It's sort of like eating. You need to eat to survive, but eating isn't your goal in life. Or at least it isn't for most of us.

The goal is to provide a service in the best way I know how. Put a good team together, pay them well, and make sure they have a good environment to work in. Keep customers and employees happy. If that doesn't work, then I'll quit and do something else. No big deal.

The best definition of evil IMO is extreme narcissism. No empathy. The corporate mandate to maximize profits is inherently evil. Every person, every relationship, every marketing angle is part of a scheme to maximize $$$. Of course Intel leverages their virtual monopoly to maximize profits. If they had real competition then they'd use different tactics. AMD would do the same.

Illegal, dishonest, subversive acts are all on the table. All that matters is if they make sense from a profit perspective.

Just...wow. Apparently you're the only one on the planet that has a business whose goal is not to make a profit. Ok then, lost cause. Enjoy your retirement you won't be prepared for. I wish you luck! :)

Apparently? I guess you are proving my point. Would you be similarly amazed to find people who don't *live* to make money?

I'm very well prepared for retirement, thanks. It sounds as though you may not be very well prepared for what comes next. Or before, as chance might have it.

I am not saying this is the case but it seemed like retailers were having trouble stocking the K chips for the last 1-2 months. The K chips are now back in stock everywhere and BCLK oc goes away, interesting.
