Valve today announced that Steam, the Bellevue, WA based company's pioneering PC platform for digital content, has surpassed 13 million active accounts since its launch in 2002. With over 150 games and 2500 updates in a broad selection of genres and dozens of other PC applications, movies, and demos available, Steam has become a leading destination for millions of gamers around the world. The activity of online gameplay via Steam averages over 7 billion player minutes per month. This summer, more major publishers will announce that they are bringing their games to Valve's platform, using it for electronic distribution and including it in their retail product releases in order to take advantage of features such as anti-piracy, server browsing, marketing promotions and more.

So Steam is Valves online lanplayer party type deal? Like Xbox lives? Or is it their servers?

Basically. Steam is like iTunes for video games. It's an online store and account manager. You can buy and download games through it, register purchased games via serials, and launch games. There's also a news section and probably other stuff. I haven't had Steam for awhile.

I guess it's kind of like WoW, only you don't have to pay a monthly fee and the people using it have much, much shorter attention spans.

You're explanation needs further explaining.....How is the Steam Client anything like WoW? :wtf: Ive used Steam since I first bought HL2, and it is very handy. No discs to manage, lose, or get scratched. Friends lists, server lists, auto-patching of games, purchase a game with a couple of clicks, no limit to redownloading a game due to formatting your drives. Steam has come along way since its introduction.

You don't actually need CD's for WoW either.

Well... you're deffinately not safe from me scolding you on your grammar. BAD GRAMMAR!:nutkick: There are other ways to keep cheaters at bay buddy. Perhaps someday when your older you will have a steam account stolen, and then hopefully (with improved writing) you can tell us how much Steam sucks correctly.

Steam is great, you basically have an account and you go to the store to purchase the games, then you can download the game and yeah. With the Discs, they are just there to provide u with the installation content and the Serial; that makes buying online more safer though...

Optical Discs FTL!! What happens when someone steals your optical disc? I've never had my account stolen for anything. If you're afraid of someone stealing your passwords, cancel your internet, close your bank account, destroy your passport, burn your credit cards and ID's sell your car, sell your house, sell all of your posessions, and go live like a bum under a bridge where you don't have to worry day and night about someone stealing your private information.

Steam is an awesome program, and is leading the way to Digital purchases of games. It's harder to protect digital copies vs. hard copies, but they have every right to do so. Valve gives a LOT of freedom when it comes to Steam and DRM. I have HL2, Episode1 installed from 1 steam account on 4 different computers right now (because I have used 4 different PCs - I don't steal because I'm not a Hard-Left Liberal Democrat). If you want to see a piece of junk, check EA Link.

Oh, PS, if you're referring to the article about someone getting Valve Customer Info, CC info, that was from a 3rd party client who manages INTERNET-CAFE accounts - completely different from steam. Don't flip over every news article you see.
