VR doesn't look cool. To me I don't see what's so great about. I look left view goes left in game, I move mouse left view goes left in game.
Just use some cardboard attach it to your monitor all the way to your head, bam, you've now lost your peripheral vision. You can now feel like you have tunnel vision.
Reaction time will be slower in high paced games and will be more likely to get fatigued.

No I haven't tried VR, but if I get the chance I will, just sounds boring, and one more thing that can go wrong with compatability.

Well with track IR it gives you loads of advantages in flight sims so VR would do the same, nothing beats flying around and looking at your target whats not in front of you and tracking it.

First person it's not as much but it can have it's advantages, i have been using one since IL-2 and it's a must.

Here's a TrackIR, vid, although this guy is a beginner which it shows a lot. all so works much better in a fighter than that slow ass ship he's using.

I think track ir is handy, but not VR.

Never said it was the same thing, it's all so no $600+ too and well supported and teething problems are long gone many years ago.

Given time VR will grow or die, most want to see what happens before wasting money and get some thing that's not so buggy or prone too.

As the guy said in the video 3 screens or even 6 screens large screens help with trackIR and is well known for making people sick as if it was happening. I know even today if mine died i would get another some how.

Just not worth the risk with VR to me, i want some thing that's fully working without problems and until they fix VR so you don't need a more powereful system due to using it and all the other issue's along with price i am not that bothered.

No of course not, it simply means that you afford price/performance a higher priority, for me, I think VR looks interesting but I am not a hardcore gamer so would I spend the dollar to use it, probably not but that does not mean that I don't think it has potential in the future.

Games is one aspect of VR. There's also exploration (e.g., Realities) , art (e.g., La Peri, Tilt Brush ) , education (e.g. Universe sandbox), and porn (not on Steam). It's all about the immersive experience VR offers that you will not get from a monitor nor a multi-monitor setup.

This just in: Most people aren't rich.
Shocking :)
ireviewhardwaredontjudgemebymyspecs

Oh you poor sod. You must live in the Philippines where anyone with an XBox One is rich. I got myself an HTC Vive and I'm just a factory worker.

I feel personally like VR sucks because I'd want to get up and walk around and then I'd hit the mess of things in my room, probably knock over a toaster or something and burn my house down. All while believing I was fighting aliens.

The HTC Vive has a camera on the front used for the chaperone system. You can set it up in various ways to reduce the risk of hitting stuff.

If you think VR is only for gaming, then you are truly narrow minded. Here is one scientific application. VR protein interaction modeling.

As a matter of fact multiple Universities' Biotechnology labs are working on VR assisted genome editing. (hint part of my project as well)

VR is big, it's coming. Refuse it all you can but it WILL take over everything.

VR has ton of potential, however it is not yet ready.
Its more of a gimmick from what I've seen so far.
I tried Gear VR which is pretty much a fancy cardboard, which I have at home 3d printed :).
I tried also the Oculus, a pre-release version though, but even that one was still a joke, compared to what I expected. Very poor quality, bulky, I don't see very good applicability yet.
It was nice for site viewing though :)

2 x the performances of the Titan X..... in VR.... that nobody cares about....
Nobody bloody knows dafuq that means. It's 2.x performance "at certain tasks".

Actually VR sounds kinda scary to me and I think this is the same for many other people as well.... I watched a video from Gamespot describing the experience of playing VR games for prolonged time and is kinda unsettling. I think I might have some existential issues about what reality do I live and how much time do I want to spend in virtual reality. I know the technology is revolutionary and it will probably change gaming forever, but it is kinda scary at the same time. After all, I can play games on my monitor for 1-2 hours then get back to work or something productive without much of a problem. If I play VR and I get so immersed that I can't switch off easily from it... then it is definitely a big drawback.

On the other hand, I have 4k monitor and I know the level of detail is considerably higher compared to 1080p. That said, I would love to get a GPU that can max out games at 4k without spending outrageous amounts of money on it... but with the state of the GPU market currently I suspect this will be way down the line.

VR may not get that cheap after all. Flag ship cellphones still cost $400+ off contract.
Forgive me but is that really relevant? Most people would say that mobile communications is pretty much an everyday necessity these days, can the same be said for a VR Headset?

Same display tech. The only thing that @xkm1948 is wrong about is the price - displays are getting cheaper and since the initial release until now a generic 6-7" 1080p IPS display w/ controller board fell in price from almost $200 to right about $40 (same goes for 9.7" retina displays, thanks to LG).

Now smartphone manufacturers are aiming at 2K, which means it starts off just as expensive high-end only feature (a 5.5" 1440p screen assembly goes for ~$150-200 w/ MIPI-DSI driver board just like 1080p was 2 years ago), but by 2018-2019 will be in every mid-to-high price range smartphone/tablet/VR headset.

A poll? When did that happen?
Gotta check the front page. I have a habit of visiting forums straight away.

EDIT: Crap! I just wasted my 1000's post on this. Wanted to make it memorable... :banghead:

If you were serious about tech, you'd worry about your 1024th post instead ;)

Such a Condescending Attitude "" IT STINKS"

Being Rich means having wealth to dispose of ie disposable income
thats like 1% of the planets population
when all the necessities of life are paid for
like
BUYING FOOD
Paying RENT/MORGAGES
RAISING kids ( NOT CHEAP ).
there may be a little money left over
To invest that money in Virtual reality Tech that may go the same way as 3d TV is a step to far at the moment

That doesn't sound right and you know it. A factory worker in Maroko ( working for Dacia for example) will get a few dollars per day probably ( I don't really know ) . A factory worker in Denmark working for the same company will have 6-digit yearly salary. So no.

Cost is my main concern about VR as well. Otherwise, I don't think it is inherently a bad tech.

When quality VR sets come down to sub $300...then it'll be time to consider them.

$600+...nah. Tech has been around a long time. Besides, first gens almost always have issues or quirks that don't get resolved till gen 3 or 4.

Early adopters are few and they pay a price premium. It's been this way since the beginning of the world...

Well, I voted price/performance. If you have that issue sorted; 4k and VR will both have better FPS and at the same time become more affordable.

Big surprise, VR is nice and fun, but it's also rife with exaggerated industry-induced hype; time will tell whether it's a fad or a definite thing, but so far it's mostly hot air.

Article author did wrong compute on survey results.

VR as a thing is not something people buy GPU for... but more like another threshold to consider, when buying a new GPU - a bit more than good enough for 1080p and considerably lower than 4k. It's more like... I don't go to buy a barely VR capable GPU... I go buy best price/performance GPU that is also capable for good VR experience (and not the minimum one).... but the emphasis is still on price/performance, not the VR (yet, it also has to be able to do VR! ... and possibly also freesync ... and fit into my mITX case).

Another example and maybe better explanation. If you did similar survey for new display and options are - price/performance; display size; 16:9; 21:9; freesync; g-sync; HDR; curved; HDMI; VGA; DP.

and the result comes back with 2% for DP only and you come out with article, that nobody cares about DP connectivity :D NOBODY buys a display because it can get picture over DP... but it has to have it among other things. Same thing with VR capability... if you buy a GPU today, it HAS to be good enough for VR also. ALSO if you go for 4k playability, the GPU is automatically very capable for VR ...

As somebody with 3 TItan X and planning to grab 1080s to tide me until P100, price of VR is still a big deal. Just because some have the money to pay for things doesn't mean we want to spend the money and essentially waste it if it's a dead end. As my job has DK2s and I've experience Vive and CV1 I can definitely say I have experience with VR and it's a toy. You can do lots of things and I'm even helping LM integrate VR in certain areas but at home it's still a toy. A 600 or 800 dollar freakin toy. When home VR is more relevant it may get a different designation to me, but for now it's a show piece. Something to tell your friends look at what I have. I'd rather spend 800 bucks on a set of cams for my car, something I use every day and puts a smile on my face, or get my SO something nice to put a smile on her face, buy the two kids something to put a smile on their face, take the family out on a trip, put a 4k TV in my room, whatever. I think a few are being a bit too pushy because they're enthusiastic about the product but that doesn't mean others share that same enthusiasm. Others might not want to put that money aside for something that could essentially turn into a dead end....again. Just my 2c.

Honestly, your 3rd titan X is a much bigger waste of money. For most of us computer entirely (including GPU's and whatnot) is an entertainment unit mostly => A TOY. I buy new bigger and better displays and new more powerful GPU's just for entertainment purpose only. The web surfind, e-mail reading, programming and "work" part I could do on a NUC with big enough 100$ display for that matter.
So whining here about VR being a 600/800$ toy is seriously weird. Even weirder for me is that you use computer with 3x GPU and ... find VR useless toy? Do you use your GPU's for compute and not for visuals?
