Is not only nVidia's fault, most of it is of Retailer's. All of them are greedy bastards going for a quick profit from impatient idiots with cash to throw away.
This is how it always was.

While it is expected for a much cheaper card to sell better than a much more expensive one, I don't think 1070 will have the success of 970. I think 1080 will sell much better than 980, while 1070 will sell much worst than 970. 970 was playing along back then, 1070 have to deal with 980Tis, new that will probably sell out at discounts from retailers and second hand, 980s, Furys, Nanos etc. At the same time Polaris is promising just too much for less than $250 and that will be enough to make people not to invest over $300. 970 on the other hand had only to fight Tonga and Tonga wasn't enough to stop people from going to 970. On the contrary 970 was the reason for 285X to get delayed for a full year.

It is entirely because of the GTX 970 being a best-selling GPU, that the 1070 is now placed in the market like it is today. The market is saturated with mid range cards that are pretty recent, and mid range cards are not the cards that are upgraded quickly - the masses of consumers in this price bracket buy something for 2-3 years at least. The same goes, in a different way, for the GTX 980ti versus the 1080 - higher performance against a slightly higher price - because there is nothing that can beat it today but perf is still pretty close to the 980ti. Again, the only potential (sensible?) buyers for the 1080 are the people who do *not* have a 980ti.

From that POV, the launch pricing scheme isn't strange at all.

Can't complain about others paying the premium for my better choice in products for the future.

Now we just need the RX480 to be good enough (not better, just good enough) at a reasonable price point (GTX980 performance at anything under $250), and we have ourselves a price war. If AMD's claims are anything near reality, I'd honestly be torn between a GTX 1070 and the RX480. However, if nVidia can't stabilize it's prices and AMD actually sells GTX980 performance at 200-250, it's pretty much no-contest for me.

Ferrari vs Volkswagen, which do you think gets a higher profit?
Also AMD's track record? you mean that 5000, 6000, 7000 etc series which all were fantastic? or did you meant it in a positive way?

Come on man, you've been here 7 years and still manage to double post.

Irrespective of the performance that the lower middle class and the price is overkill. And GTX 1080 is € 800 +. I wonder last year or this factory owned by mafia .

The big question is whether or not AMD will have "supply sortages" like nVidia. 1080 is "available" for almost 3 weeks now, yet you can hardly find any even for whatever price.
We'll see how easily you'll be able to get 1070, maybe it's all about G5X and not something else.

Nice premium for the reference card, since IMO the only good thing in it is that fullcover waterblocks arrive sooner than for custom models..

demand for 1070 will be far higher than the under supplied 1080.. i expect some very high prices.. :)

trog

Oh please, this might be the case for "some places" on planet earth as for the other blips; they are all to happy to continue screwing you over and there is nothing you can do about it.

So after reading all these comments, is it safe to say that i will not be getting a gtx 1070 for under $400 usd until next year?!?! And am i better off buying a 970 while i wait for the 1070 to go down or what? My price range is 400 max for a gpu and i kinda need one quick...pretty much asap...and just another thing i should mention, if i do somehow get a 1070...will they release aftermarket cooling cards for example the evga ssc or ftw edition? Thanks for the feedback

Also was wondering how the prices of the 900 series gpus will be doing on the release of the 1070...will they be cheaper? Or same price? Or will 980s or 980tis drop in price?

Can anyone explain to me:

NVIDIA VRWorks audio - being hyped as VR thing and being part of VRworks... and... using Oculus and Vive headsets ... does it mean it's stereo only (like downconverting surround sound to 2.0 stereo for your VR headset headphones)? Or can I use the benefit in surround sound speaker system (physical 5.1/7.1 speakers) also?

I don't have any recent nvidia (nor AMD) GPU, but ... can the HDMI audio from your GPU output surround sound (5.1/7.1) or only stereo?

and same questions about AMD TrueAudio / AMD HDMI audio output? Does it work the same or is the output somehow different? I have here older AMD GPU (without TrueAudio) and I can't find a place where I could set the HDMI speaker count at all... I assume it's stereo only.... but I have no way to be sure as it seems unchangable (or I can't find a place to change speaker setup for HDMI audio).

Benchmark Scores 3050 scores good 15-20% lower than average, despite ASUS's claims that it has uber cooling.
Wake me up when it goes near claimed 379$ (which is still 50$ above 970).

When nVidia started new round of price gouging with "FE editions" for 1070/1080, some bright minds explained, that it's "a new process" which is "moar expensive" and that's why.

And all that despite the fact, that 980Ti was a 600mm2 card, 980 was 400mm2 and 1070/1080 are ~300mm2.

Now we see AMD coming with the new process, formidable perf, oh, and for less money than previous gen (280 was 279$).
They probably have cheaper "new process", I guess.

Oh, and all those "evil retailers", not nVidia's fault.

GTX980 performance

RX480 is likely above 970, but below 980.
Note that AMD compared it to both, which wouldn't make sense if it was above 980 performance wise.

Isn't it a great card given it's price and low power consumption (likely under 130w) if it is beteen 970/980?

Setting expectations that it must beat 980... Why is that? To bash it and be disappointed when it appears to be what I said above?
Something else?

I can't make any sense off it.

I doubt there will be a price decrease. Nvidia will just phase out the 900 series over time.

So would it be safe to buy a EVGA 970 FTW edition? Even with the 1070 being released today? Or should i just suck it up and wait and continue using my 200 series gpu lmfao

You need to look back furthur in history.

Firstly, the 1070 is not overpriced. the 970 was 330, yes, but the 770 and 670 were both $400, and nobody was complaining back then. And the 280 was 279 because it was a rebrand of a 2 year old GPU. When it first came out (as the 7950) it was 449. And nobody was complaining that the price was too high, even though the 6950 was only $250.

New processes are always expensive, and the first gen of GPUs on a new arch are always more expensive then the last GPUs on an old process. This is nothing new, and counting for inflation, the 1070 at 380 is cheaper then everything but the 970. even at 425 it would be a wash.

No, not really, as we see with RX 480.
And your argument about 280 being more expensive because it's a rebadge is puzzling.

That's what you get when Amazon's third party sellers get involved. $1299 a steal compared the Sapphire R9 295X2 for $2572 + shipping
Which is also a steal, compared to this guy by nZilla

On a serious note, comparing EOLed cards pricing to current gen card pricing doesn't make sense.

So the 970 is going to be instantly cheaper today with the release of the 1070?
I don't see the point of buying ANY card, especially if your hardware is on a tight budget.
OMG price/perf 480 (based on info we got so far) is to be NDA'd on 29th of June.
All new chips are overpriced at this point.

Oh, old chips aren't cheap enough (except 980Ti, assuming you can get one for under 400$) to justify buying them.
(I'd don't think 970 is worth more than 180$)

Well, all that assuming you can wait for a month or two.

I think folks with the "probably not available until 2017 at $379" are very much doing the sky is falling thing.

The 1080 came out only 2 weeks ago and has already been available for under $699 quite a few times. Yes it sells out very quickly as you'd expect for a brand new card, but it's definitely been available. EVGA has had them multiple times available at $619 directly from their site, Newegg has had various models at $649 off and on all week (including one with a free Gigabyte gaming mouse). Quite a few vendors have also said they expect more 1080 AIB (under $699) stock in retail next week.

There's a difference between for sale, and on sale.
If something is on sale, it infers a saving off normal price.

hmmm you know with the 1070 being so much faster and being available at 450$ on the egg... why the F is the 980 (non ti) still priced the same or higher?

Usually they drop in anticipation of the new model, you know to clear out old stock and make room for new. But no dice. 980 = 400$ refurbed, 450$ new... I don't get it.

My solution to this is to wait a month. Unless you typed in a code like destruct sequence 2 code 1 1 A 2B on your graphics card hoping to get one I would not worry. They are going to be inflated because of early demand and limited availability. If anything just wait a month and get the custom PCB variants that will inevitably be out and provide not only better cooling but better overclocking.
