Western Digital starts shipping today the high-capacity 750GB Serial ATA II WD Caviar SE16 desktop-class hard drives. Ideal for data-intensive applications, high-performance computing and multimedia systems, the WD Caviar SE16 750GB drives deliver high performance with 3Gb/s transfer rate, Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology, 16MB cache and Native Command Queuing (NCQ). WD Caviar SE16 750GB (model WD7500AAKS) hard drives may be ordered on the company's online store and through select distributors and resellers. And then you have people like me who have decided that from now on, I'll only be buying WD drives! In my books it goes WD>Hitachi>Seagate>Maxtor - I don't know where Samsung fits into that, I've never owned one.

$0.33/gig isn't too bad for 750GB in one drive. Can't wait to see the 1TBs though.

thing is .. the WD's dont seem to like my climate, so 90% of the HDD failures are WD in my area

Seagate=Western Digital>Samsung>>Hitachi>>>Maxtor

I'll buy either Seagates or Western Digital, but pretty much nothing else. I have 3 WD drives in my machine main machine, and a Seagate, along with another 2 Seagates. I have had a few drives from both companies fail, it happens with any company, but both treated me very well when I RMA'd them. WD even extened my warranty on a failed drive and RMA'd it for free because it failed a few months after the warranty expired.

I personally like all hdds as none have failed me when they werent supposed to. Well, for that matter, I havent had any fail me yet. Ive had WD (love them) Seagate (love them) Maxtor (using it now, love it) and a samsung (loved it). I havent tried Hitachi, but Im sure they are awesome.

Had two Maxtors fail on me and my only other friend with any real interest in PCs had his Maxtor die. My Hitachi works great, so I can't say anything bad about that, but the only two Seagate drives I've ever owned were slow and loud (admittedly they were in Packard Bell machines so that might explain it). Never known a WD to fail and they're normally quiet enough. Admittedly the Maxtor I have in my PC at the moment has been ok for a couple of years.

I'm pretty sure WDs have a lower return rate than Seagate, and yet Seagate has a much longer warranty.

Maybe the reason more of them are returned is because the warranty lasts longer - so if a drive fails outside of the period when WD would replace it, Seagate would accept the drive back meaning they have to replace more?

Western Digital offers a 5 year warranty also, just not on all their drives. The RAID Edition and Raptor drives have 5 year warranties.

Wow, 750GB is a lot of data... over 80 dual-layer DVDs!!! I can see one problem that I would have though. I tend to fall behind when it comes to backing my data up, so I would get to the point where I have 700GB used up and then I would have to spend months cleaning everything off it.

Or worse, the hard drive would fail and I would lose a LOT of data.

I have use all brands of hard drives, and the only brand to fail on me is no longer around... Quantum Fireballs were awful!!! I had to replace countless Quantum hard drives several years back.

They are. I have an old one, T7K250 8MB buffer and the thing is still lightening fast. It's no raptor but it's still good for it's age.
Can't wait for their T7K1000 series to be readily available here.

Western Digital or Seagate. I stick with WD because i've had a few Seagate drives die with me using them...only one of them was mine, so that was a problem.

My 120gb WD died the DAY after the warranty expired. You said they extended the warranty for you!?!? I never even called them. That sucks. It's only been a few months since it died...maybe I should call them.

Anyway...exactly what are the AAJS and AAKS drives from Western Digital? Perpendicular or just 160gb platter size? Or both... :wtf:

Sweet, WD finally made the switch to perpendicular. Hopefully they'll use the technology in some Raptors.

As for drive preference, I've had good luck with Seagate, WD, and Hitatchi. I have both Seagates and WDs around here that are over 5 years old and still goin strong. I have a hitachi in my G5 that's 4yrs old.

With Maxtor, on the other hand, I've had nothing but bad luck. Every maxtor I ever owned lasted less that 2yrs. 2 lasted less than 9 months.

Seagates fail so much.... Most HDD faliures here are seagates... Maxtor is worse.
