As previously reported by TPU, in preparation for Intel's Kaby Lake architecture release, MSI published BIOS updates for its MSI 100 series chipset motherboards that (supposedly) guaranteed compatibility with Intel's upcoming platform. However, the new BIOS update seemingly disappeared from MSI's support webpages without any information as to why. According to ComputerBase, MSI representatives mentioned that an error was found in the code, and that a fix was currently being worked on. According to MSI, the fixed BIOSes should be made available shortly.

In any case, this scenario is better than the alternative of it having been users discovering the BIOS support to be defective. MSI did a good job in finding this ahead of Kaby Lake's launch and potential accompanying headaches from a not fully compatible CPU and motherboard combo.

So what happened if you already applied the new Bios?

Cross your fingers and hope that the bug will not reveal itself until a fixed version arrives

Since i reported my problems to MSI and they subsequently removed the new BIOS for my mainboard, let me tell you what happened to me, i'm sure it's somehow related to the bug.

I've had massive problems with the BIOS 1.5 for my board, the Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON.

After updating, i've had some initial problems that Windows 10 refused to boot with a message "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE". I could solve these after a lot of trial & error. But after tuesday's Windows Updates, i suddenly had Windows freezing on me, leading to BSODs with CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. It happened a short while after booting into Windows 10. This went on 3 or 4 times and then i couldn't boot anymore, it stopped every time with this message again: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

I tried everything, rebuild BCD, various command lines from Win10 USB stick repair options, to no avail. "diskpart" wouldn't even see my SSD anymore. I wasted a couple hours on trying to repair it with every option and command line possible. The only thing that helped in the end was to put the old BIOS 1.4 (pre-Kaby Lake) back on and everything works again now.

I then reported this to MSI, and the new Kaby Lake BIOS - which was already pulled for the mainboard my friend has, a B150M Night Elf - was then also removed for my mainboard.

I highly advise everyone who already flashed the Kaby Lake BIOS to put the old BIOS file on a USB stick (extracted from the .zip). This way, should Windows fail to boot, you can flash the old BIOS easily.
