External drives sell for about $80 (1TB) and $200 (6TB), so yes, the 75% markup is a bit hard to justify, but they do have a thin mag-lev fan and a stylish aluminum enclosure. Our entire culture is trending towards style over substance, bling factor sells more than actual performance, and marketing departments have much larger budgets than engineering. They'll sell even at that price...

Sorry if that offends anyone's delicate sense of propriety...BTW I received straight "A"s in English class for 12 years, so blame my teachers for not knowing "proper" English. Oh, sorry - BTW means "by the way", for all you proper English speakers...I hereby apologize in advance for any abbreviations, acronyms, or shortcuts that I may use in the future - I have to go now and Over-Clock my Central Processing Unit so that I may get the most out of my Random Access Memory - I hope that adjusting my Real Time Clock does not cause a problem with the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface or cause my Universal Serial Bus version 3.0 to malfunction.

I've been grasping the concept of "markup" recently. And it's all a nice word for margin. It's hard to explain people they are paying two and a half times the production costs for the product. There are so many "invisible" expenses hard to explain really.
