French hardware magazine "CANARD PC HARDWARE" has apparently confirmed that AMD's upcoming Ryzen chips will be able to achieve overclocks of at least 5 GHz on air, if an easter egg hidden on the magazine's Ryzen feature. On page 10 of the digital magazine (which you can look at on the provided link) as well as the physical version, a cryptic string of binary code can be found on top of the page (for reference, the string is as follows: 010110100110010101101110010011110100001101000000010000010110100101110010001111010011010101000111). When you paste this string of binary code on any online binary to plain text converter, you get a revelation that's sure to put a little more coal on the hype train's furnace: ZenOC@Air=5G.

Apparently, the entire article is premised on an early engineering sample that the magazine managed to put its hands on - so we're not even talking about final-stepping silicon. Granted, the information, left as more of an Easter egg tease than a reveal onto itself, raises more questions than it answers (as any good, hype-generating event always does): at what voltage were the 5 GHz achieved at? How many cores did the Ryzen sample possess? Were they all operational? Was it a stable overclock? If so, for how long? What cooling solution was used?

There are potentially many more questions left unanswered by this tease, but nevertheless, this seems like a good sign for the Ryzen bandwagon.

If the highest-end 8c product overclocks to 5GHz on air, we have a winner if about 500 US/EUR. I would already think this is a true rumor since it would be devestating to pump all this high expectation then fall short and flat. I would still want to see a few months of sustained usage from the enthusiast population to determine if the new platform is stable. This is a new CPU, new chipset, new everything and a first time effort from AMD. I would expect a fair amount of bugs at the start.

This is kinda odd, if you read the maganize they said the chip has the frequency limited to 3.3ghz, and now the same chip can be overclocked to 5.0?

just assume its total bullshit K? Remember they reported Broadwell was 5GHx on air and what did we find out? It could barely do 4.2GHz....fail.

None of these reports mean squad. Every one of them has been BS.

EDIT though SL was able to bin 5GHz 4790Ks...that was kinda a thing

Yeah right 5GHz on air with 1 out of 8 cores being active and hyper-threading disabled.

It's not even about who got to 5GHz first or whatever, it's about the idea Ryzen CPU's can't clock high which is why they run it at such low clocks. Which apparently shows it's not true and it's like that just for stock models. Just like my 5820K runs at crappy clocks, but can be easily OC'ed to 4.5GHz and beyond.

Many 4790K hit 5Ghz without trouble but require at least 240mm close loop liquid cooler.
Many Sandy Bridge-E also hit 5Ghz.
For i7-975 yes it is far away from 5Ghz.
5775C is worse. I see 4.2-4.3Ghz in all review. Probably because EDRAM hold back overclocking. 5Ghz require at least single stage phase change.

For Zen I think 4.2Ghz on air is reasonable.

I think it not wroth the thinking... Move on this has no News merit, and barely make rumor status!
I think it meant to be a ticket for those looking to ride the disappointment train.

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
I don't see this as being false based on AMD's own statements about power gating for single cores, dynamic fine incremental overclocking based on load and temperature, where the CPU can decide how fast to run based on its enviroment.

I hope to own one shortly after release as my system has aged well, but is really showing its age.

It was a lot more new back with athlon 64. I bought near release and never had a problem with the hardware.

This clickbait article has been getting more use than a hooker on a submarine.

Does anyone really believe that glofo fine tuned the process enough to achieve skylake level clocks (especially when it looks like the delay is from an immature process)?

You know, even the WCCFtech commenters were making fun about how somebody was going to make a headline article about this, and how it would be on WCCF's front page that day.

I'm surprised TPU beat it to the punch, driving that hype train right off of a cliff.

AMD hype is real, I'm upgrading to Ryzen regardless but I would not be surprised one bit if the Kaby lake's top dog overclocks easier and better, the proof is in the pudding, not some cryptic message on a PC magazine without divulging information of said binary statement; and that's why I don't read magazines inb4bait
