AMD's Upcoming Ryzen Chips to Reportedly Overclock @ 5 GHz On Air

A dozen of well respected websites all over the internet, and some unknown FRENCH magazine got hold of a ES CPU ZEN and deliveres benchmarks which no-one can confrm.

It was AMD who stated that OC's on AIR would be possible up to 4.0 to 4.5Ghz.

You should always remember that magazines are the OLD media.. and OLD media sometimes do PR stunts to get their sales and PR boosted up again.

Take it with a grain of salt, and stop publishing this sort of stuff without REAL confirmation.

Forget about 5 GHz, I think having Rayzen 8c/16 running at 4GHz is more than enough to beat all intel's offerings in gaming. My 2 cents.

I hate to dissapoint both of you fanboys here apparently, but I'm fairly confident from what I am seeing it will be more of a "meh" type thing.

It won't rock. It won't suck, either.

At least, it won't suck like bulldozer or the latest batch, but it's not going to be the end-all either. It's just going to be a good price-performance product.

It's not even about who got to 5GHz first or whatever, it's about the idea Ryzen CPU's can't clock high which is why they run it at such low clocks. Which apparently shows it's not true and it's like that just for stock models. Just like my 5820K runs at crappy clocks, but can be easily OC'ed to 4.5GHz and beyond.

nooooo a 5820K does not easily OC to 4.5GHz and beyond. You live in a dream world. 4.4GHz is the average.

My 1650v3 and most other will tell you only the best of the best chips on air or water get 4.5GHz stable.

I am assuming a decent price-performance ratio. Haswell IPC, or thereabouts, and the octocore will be within €200 of an equivalent Intel octocore, meaning €850 or so.

French hardware magazine "CANARD PC HARDWARE" has apparently confirmed that AMD's upcoming Ryzen chips will be able to achieve overclocks of at least 5 GHz on air, if an easter egg hidden on the magazine's Ryzen feature. On page 10 of the digital magazine (which you can look at on the provided link) as well as the physical version, a cryptic string of binary code can be found on top of the page (for reference, the string is as follows: 010110100110010101101110010011110100001101000000010000010110100101110010001111010011010101000111). When you paste this string of binary code on any online binary to plain text converter, you get a revelation that's sure to put a little more coal on the hype train's furnace: ZenOC@Air=5G.

Apparently, the entire article is premised on an early engineering sample that the magazine managed to put its hands on - so we're not even talking about final-stepping silicon. Granted, the information, left as more of an Easter egg tease than a reveal onto itself, raises more questions than it answers (as any good, hype-generating event always does): at what voltage were the 5 GHz achieved at? How many cores did the Ryzen sample possess? Were they all operational? Was it a stable overclock? If so, for how long? What cooling solution was used?

There are potentially many more questions left unanswered by this tease, but nevertheless, this seems like a good sign for the Ryzen bandwagon.

As the reference to a 5 GHZ overclock on air does not mention how many cores I assume if it has any truth it is only 1 core. I still highly doubt this information as the 14nm LPP node of GF is not a high performance node, nothing at all like the node of 32nm FD SOI of piledriver. It is a low power node with a narrow band of optimal performance. My guess is even with a custom liquid loop it will not come close to a 5 GHZ overclock on all 8 cores. More likely 3.9 to 4.0 GHZ at best. The hype that has surfaced lately has to be dampened. Ryzen is a very good chip, but it is not going to teleport us to the other end of the solar system.

Hmm my FX-9590 was running fine on air with 5 GHz and 5.2 GHz with a H110 - so why should the ZEN not do that??

Maybe, just maybe, the reason is because your CPU is already on 5ghz when turbo is enabled?

The H110 is a hell out a beast CPU cooler. Try overclock your 9590 to 6.9ghz and tell me the results

3.4ghz + 47% = 5.0ghz
4.7ghz + 47% = 6.9ghz

Not going to happen. I play games, run DB´s and crunch on it. It runs 24/7 with 5.2 GHz and is stable.
I have tried to push it - the max was around 5.6 GHz - but was not stable. Sure if it´s only to see how high it can go for a moment,
but not recommendable for everyday use.

Woooo, lets all obsess and argue over an arbitrary number that is only half the equation for performance and may or may not be attainable anyway.

Although judging from the blender benchmark the IPC will be good, so if it does OC well AMD are on to a winner. Hopefully anyway.

The only thing sure with AMD is they consistently over-promise and under-deliver.

Not if you get 8 cores with the same performance per core (ie 2x performance over 6700k)

We'll only know for sure when they actually get released I guess. Until then it's all speculation :)

5 GHz Ryzen AIR - not real. Thats all.
4.2-4.4 GHz could be doable at all cores.
