AMD may be preparing a true silicon monster to compete directly with Intel's HEDT line, a dual octo-core-die based 16 core, 32 thread processor under the Ryzen branding, if a leak from ChipHell is to be believed.

According to the leak (and my rough google translate interpretation of both it and a German version kindly provided by Heise.de) the processor will not use the current dual channel AM4 socket. Rather, it will use a cut down version of the Naples based server SP3 socket called SP3r2. SP3r2 and the new chip would be quad channel, putting it in direct memory bandwidth competition with Intel's HEDT lineup.

It's also worth noting this would be a LGA-based socket; that is, rather than pins on the processor, the processor will have copper pads for small metal points in the socket to make pressure contact with, like what Intel has been doing for some time. Naples already uses such a config, but AMD has not ever used this configuration in a consumer socket.

As well as this exciting chip, the leak indicates AMD has a new chipset planned exclusively for it, named X399. The chip and chipset are expected to be announced sometime in June, with an unknown date of actual retail availability. Also, unknown as of now is the Chip's clock, TDP, or pretty much any other specification information.

Likely cut down Naples processors, but that's not a bad thing. Hoping this will have quad-channel memory setup like Intel's.

EDIT: Not reading the full post hits hard. R-T-B already said this. :)

I was suspecting a socket between AM4 and SP3, and it seems I was right. Great move from AMD! They can have a new (HEDT) product line here with 8, 12 and 16-core processors, all quad-channel memory, to kick Intel in the nutsack with the price/performance and performance/watt figures, and probably trade blows in bare performance.

I so wish to see mITX boards with this socket!

It will get bad reviews because of the inferior gaming performance at 800x600 compared to 7700K.

The good thing with this line-up (for AMD) will be that less people will bench it for gaming, much less will consider buying it for gaming. It will cater those you can put those cores to use, which is a win for AMD in this market if they price it well.

I think all the silly children making review based troll comments should buy a Ryzen chip and stop being armchair tech referee's. STFU and go back to your lego.

Back to topic. I would love to have a 16core32thread little monster at home as well as in lab. Then I don't even have to pay to subscribe to the supercomputing clusters!

Hmm, maybe?
Dual Zeppelin dies - 64 PCI-E 3.0 lanes:
48 (3x16) for graphics
Up to 12 lanes dedicated for M.2/U.2 slots
(3x4 M.2/U.2 with x4 chipset link, 2x4 with x8 chipset link)

One can hope...

If this is true, this doesn't mean AMD is abandoning Socket AM4, it means they will have a high end Enthusiast platform along with the AM4 socket. This isn't ZEN 2 or ZEN 3, this is something completely different. I believe AMD finally realized that DDR4 memory speed is the key to the unlocked potential in the ZEN architecture, because of Infinity Fabric. Infinity Fabric, is a lot more than just a regular Interconnect, A lot More.

Do you all remember the so called Quad-FX Platform AMD released way back? They were unsuccessful, for obvious reasons, but with ZEN, it can work very very well. This might be coming back lol, who knows.

This could Add to AMD's Baseline and Differentiate between the AMD Rysen Bread and Butter line and a NEW HIGH END ( core and Clock ) line
So what if its two different Sockets Defining Market Segments
Pee-ople don't have problems with Intels multitude of Sockets for Different Markets ( just with their making sockets redundent after 12 to 18 months)

The quad-core only part launch is still planned, and we might see something like that there.

Might.

Intel has many many sockets. Confusing to the average person.

Socket AM4 can be for the mainstream, mobile and everything else, this new socket for the enthusiast market. $1,000 CPU's though, that is steep lol

The thing is though that Intel's high end Xeons are readily available on Ebay for 1/4 of its original cost.

Suppose that's the benefit of their big market share.
