With the recent launch of the Windows 10 Creators Update, Microsoft decided to make a quick reference guide to the gaming related features on one of its employee blog sites, majornelson.com. Of the things covered, streaming features via it's Beam game recording service (a recent Microsoft acquisition) took the front stage. Also covered was Game Mode, that mode that promises to eek more performance out of your video game of choice via shuffling around of processes and prioritization changes. Of course, the numerous sub-settings and other little gaming related features in the update are covered in the blog entry as well.

If this sounds interesting to you, then this is probably good reading material and I'd advise you to read the complete guide. Check the source link to this article to get the full article. If you are more interested in the Creators Update as a whole and a guide to the various notable features in it besides just the gaming ones? I'll have an (admittedly much overdue) article on that no later than tomorrow. Watch this space.

Is that Forza? Have they moved away from crappy race tracks and gave way for more Need for Speed like roads to race on? When did this happen and which ones are for PC now? I'm interested...

I was going to do that in my hands-on, but benchmarks quickly got axed as I struggled to finish even the standard hands-on by deadline due to some family matters.

All the same, you will have a hands-on tomorrow. I don't know if there are any plans for actual benchmarks later however or if that is completely axed.

That right there in the screenshot is Forza Horizon 3 (also on PC), an open world Forza game. You are probably thinking about Forza Motorsport, closed track arcade-sim (Forza Motorsport 6 is also on PC).

Going to give this game mode a try tonight. Sometimes things feel faster on Windows 10, sometimes they seem slower than my old Win 7 install. Hopefully this helps.

I've tested it with Warhammer Dawn of War II. It has a built in benchmark. I had higher maximum frames without it, but with it enabled i had higher minimum frames, so a smoother experience..

I'll predict right now that this 'gaming update' is 99% marketing, 1% useless features and mostly stuff you will want to turn off just like that awesome XBOX DVR functionality that fucks up stability.

Sorry MS, but you and gaming just don't mix, stop trying, leave it at DirectX and stick to your silly console.

It doesn't change anything. It doesn't reinstall apps that you uninstall. It doesn't change the default app settings. It doesn't change your privacy settings.

Nothing you've set gets removed, added, and/or set back to the default settings for the Creator's Update.

It did fairly agressively reccomend my default apps be changed in the start-up wizzard, but you can opt out easily yes.

Downloaded Forza 6 Apex. Seems very nice. Though driving model is kinda weird. Like in all racing "simulators". The steering just feels awkward. Cars don't seem to steer at all at speeds where even my normal non sporty hatchback can do.

Dunno, I used to use Game Mode in avast! which I think does similar things as Windows one. Seems the same since framerate differences are tiny and non perceivable anyway.

It's Forza Horizon 3, the Horizon series is open-world and more arcadey but you can tweak the settings to make the physics and handling as realistic as you like. It's a truly fantastic racing game man, check it out!

Hahaha! That doesn't do what you think it does. That's putting the antivirus in game mode, not your system. Always leave it on, it just means it won't show you any stupid pop up messages when you are full screen and the anti virus will not be running any scans when you are gaming. That's all...

It does however destroy the Factory hidden image and kindly replaces it with a vanilla install of the version you updated from, no drivers or software left from the original vendor....it did this to my Asus laptop in my sig. No more option to revert to Factory after rolling back from Creator.

Consensus seems to be that it helps on older systems only. For UWP titles. Some game mode benefits apply to classic titles, but not all, so people have concentrated on UWP instead.

Awesome, MS improves gaming environments where 95% of the customer base never plays a game in :D

Erm, no. I know what it does, I'm in close relations with devs. It also says what it does in its settings.

avast! Game Mode sets game priority to high, sets power plan to high performance and pauses all scheduled system tasks, operations, updates as well as its own operations like scheduled scans, updating and warnings. It's by far not "just hides popups". It does that by default for any full screen app...

At this point, we can say they've got to start somewhere. But knowing MS, they'll probably try to leverage this to push UWP :(

"If the manufacturer set up your PC to run from a compressed Windows image file and included an option to restore factory settings, the “Restore factory settings” option will be removed after you upgrade to Windows 10, but other recovery options are still available. The “Restore factory settings” option is not supported in Windows 10 on compressed operating systems"

EDIT Doing the upgrade clean install now to 15063
