Ahead of their May 29 unveiling at AMD's pre-Computex 2017 show in Taipei, and their scheduled market availability for Summer 2017, two 16-core AMD Threadripper processor SKUs surfaced as online-store listings, on Greek online retailer Skroutz. These include the AMD Threadripper 1998, and the AMD Threadripper 1998X. The listings don't come with price-tags.

Some specifications of the two SKUs were revealed, too. To begin with, both chips feature 16 cores, and SMT enables 32 logical CPUs for the OS to address. The Threadripper 1998 is clocked at 3.20 GHz, with an unknown boost clock; while the 1998X is clocked higher, at 3.50 GHz, with unknown boost clocks. The "X" in the model number could denote XFR, which could unlock higher automated overclocks than the boost clock. Both chips are listed with AMD socket SP3r2 support, AMD's upcoming 4,094-pin LGA socket.

Damn, the price is what I wanted to know the most. I really hope AMD will price this very competitively, as I'm sick of seeing outrageous, eyeball-bursting $1500 prices for Intel's high-end CPU's. The monopoly must end! :banghead:

Intel is about to be spanked bad.

In truth X299 line-up looks pathetic compared to what AMD has to offer. The only thing which is better is AVX-512 support, something completely useless for widely understood 'Enthusiast' user. Perhpas Intel should offer RGB CPUs?

If price is right and most important connectivity on the boards is what I need I'll get my first AMD chip since dinosaurs died off. :p

How many CPUs does SP3r2 support? One or two? Like Intel's LGA 2011?

My assumption is 1000 and 1100 dollars.

however 900\1000 is 100% possible judging by the lower end prices (R7) as these are just 2x R7 on one socket :)
Either way, R7's are just as fast as a 1000 dollar Intel chip and this really disrupts the market :)

Benchmark Scores #1 worldwide on 3D Mark 99, back in the (P133) days. :)
And then there are the lower core 10/12 versions. I can see those being around the 600-750 range which would be awesome vs the competition.

Another possibility, given yields are supposed to be good is that we see a reduction in the price of R7, e.g. 1800X drops to 399 and the 10 core TR comes in at ~600 ....

The overall platform cost will still be higher and presumably AMD gets some money per motherboard, so they could potentially do that and still make the same margins.

The Intel HEDT boards all seem to be 200+ (and a lot more + in some cases) more than the enthusiast class.

They could go the other way too, cheaper motherboards and slightly pricier CPUs. Time will tell but it is looking like a fantastic platform. I'm kind of sorry I went with R7 but then again it presumably helped AMDs bottom line so worth it.

AMD needs to price these CPUs carefully if they are attempting to shake up Intel's monopoly. Wishful thinking but if they are priced between £500-£700, Intel will have a headache.

What exactly is this weird creature called "widely understood enthusiast"?
Why AVX-512 is useless to him? Do you know what AVX-512 is? :)

AVX-512 is the best thing since sliced bread.
If CPU doesn't have it, it is a crappy CPU.
It gives such a tremendous benefits, it is simply outrageous that someone dared skipping this feature altogether in their pathetic near bancrupt parodies of labs.

Rumors say, AVX-512 opens chakras and improves karma too (on top of amazing benefit of 512 bit SIMD instruction set, which allows you to execute 512bit SIMD instructions, no less!!!)

Who knows, if it isn't AVX-512 that make SkyLake faster than Broadwell-E, eh?

How freaking dare they!?!?!? It's a tech from 2013, FFS!
Shame on you, AMD, I always knew your chips were too hot or, when not, had some other gotchas I have yet to google!

Yeah, since software is making huge use of AVX-512.

One does not simply use AVX. Software has to be written to take advantage of it.

That's neither here nor there ,you could have a shit case or poor Hsf , it should go without saying that 16 cores will run hot as it will for intel.
Unless they are clocked really low and no one wants that from either cpu vendor so have a think and if you're going to try and mock Amd , make feckin sense would you.
And i got plenty of cooling ,im ready, I didn't cheap out on Any part of my pc bar cpu 159£ years ago and still doing ok.
I can see prices spanning 500-1000 on cpus i would really like a budget cpu option say 8 core 2 per ccx just as a first buy option at 450 notes but im likely dreaming.
As i am about the 1976X i have seen rumoured i was born in that year ,shits gota be lucky for me surely.

The TR chips are in a much bigger physical package so more surface area to pull the heat off, that will help things along.

Remember Intel sounds like they are going to release second. Broadwell e already offered up to 22/24 cores. If Intel needs to they can just move branding over... Don't forget they also have all their 3647 based stuff as well.

It costs money to make motherboards with twice as many DRAM channels and PCI-E lanes. All of those pins aren't for show and it costs money to produce a motherboard with the circuitry to wire all of that up. There is literally more motherboard.

I'm well aware, my point was that AMD should also be making more licence fee from these higher end boards ...

The TR chips are in a much bigger physical package so more surface area to pull the heat off, that will help things along.

Not to mention they'll be soldered IHS, like the Ryzen CPUs and the current 2011 Intel CPUs. That improves cooling performance greatly.

It costs money to make motherboards with twice as many DRAM channels and PCI-E lanes. All of those pins aren't for show and it costs money to produce a motherboard with the circuitry to wire all of that up. There is literally more motherboard.

Plus, not all the Intel HEDT boards are over $200. There are a few decent ones for under $200. Heck, you can pick up a decent X99 board right now off newegg for $160.
