AMD Announces the Radeon RX Vega Nano

AMD had two press days over the weekend to cover a whole bunch of announcements- Ryzen Threadripper, RX Vega, Vega Pro and more. They provided details galore on the Vega microarchitecture, and the two RX Vega versions. Well, make that three now. AMD at Capcaicin SIGGRAPH 2017 also announced and showed off the RX Vega Nano.

Raja Koduri, Senior Vice-president of AMD's Radeon Technology Group, came up on stage minutes ago and handed over one of the very few working samples of this new card to Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games and Unreal Engine. The RX Vega Nano is an update to the R9 Nano from 2015 which was based off AMD's "Fiji" microarchitecture and was the then king of efficiency and small form factor support. We were only just talking about how RX Vega missed an opportunity with HBM2 to provide another mITX GPU and looks like AMD agreed.



This RX Vega Nano appears to share a common base with the RX Vega 64 Limited Edition in that it sports a silver aluminum shroud, but has a single large axial fan vs the blower fan in the latter. It also appears to have the same single row of I/O- 3x fullsize DisplayPort and 1x HDMI- and the entire card is estimated at ~5-6" in length based on a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation. We are also not sure if the packaging for the card will include what appears to be a sealed hard case with foam inserts, and we will share any new information as and when we get them.

Update: We have a few more images courtesy smallformfactor. net which confirm the I/O ports but also clarifies a single 8-pin PCIe power connector and no backplate (at least on this sample).

They had to do a Nano. That was one of the main reasons why they pursued Fiji and HBM in the first place. Like Fiji Nano, it will probably be the best bang for the space it occupies.

Considering not much likely changed as far as the PCB is concerned, I think the lessons learned with Fiji Nano will carry over to Vega Nano. Whine shouldn't be a problem on the majority of products.

Considering that there are 1070 in ITX form factor, the Vega Nano will no longer occupy it's own niche. Wonder if it will still be priced absurdly high...

most likely a tad cheap or bit expensive than the RX Vega 64 that it's based on like what happened with the Fury X and R9 Nano.

One of the companies should use it as an image on their version of the Nano and call it the Nano Epic Edition

I do love mr Sweeny and have all the respect in the world for him but man, he always looks like he has down syndrome

But the Nano was the full chip. Is this going to be the full chip too?

If not then its probably not going to be that popular.

Also, note the GTX 1080 Mini is something that exists with virtually no performance loss over a standard GTX 1080.

Lets hope AMD lets AIB's do their own cooling with the Vegas

Considering that the R9 Nano was slower than the R9 Fury, Vega Nano will likely performe worst than a Vega 56 which will put it in the performance range of a GTX 1070. It would be foolish to price it above the 1070 ITX that has been on the market for over a year...

That might be an assumption. The 1070 ITX is a good card though.

Oh come on, as the creator of Unreal Engine his job is to optimize for all architectures ... The new radeon gpu profiler is out and giving vega to Sweeney to play with latest UE beta is a good thing ... and good marketing
