AMD has published a list of coolers that are officially compatible with their upcoming Threadripper CPUs. It's no surprise there needs to be a compatibility list - the new CPUs top out at 16-core, 32-thread monsters which have never before graced the HEDT space, with an accompanying large CPU die size and heatsink. The socket being an entirely new affair, a new retention kit must also be made available by cooler manufacturers.

AMD itself will be offering an Asetek retention kit for AIO cooling solutions on their Threadripper retail packaging, which should make most Asetek-built AIOs to be compatible with the TR4 socket. These coolers are automatically added to the list. However, there may be some other coolers that are compatible with the newest socket that are not listed on AMD's site as of yet. For those cases, AMD reminds us all that we should check with our cooling solution manufacturer whether an adapter is available or not, and whether our current cooling solution is sufficient for the task at hand. Other coolers are now receiving mid-production updates after a certain date to include the compatible mounting hardware. Check the source link for the AMD compatibility page, and the below image for the current state of affairs.

Small typo, where highlighted.

I wouldn't call a 10-thread difference small :p

Thank you, updated.

Edit, PS: Also, hello there, fellow Portuguese ;) Thank you for stopping by today, HTC.

This was removed from that page on August 2nd.

As of August 1, 2017, there are also another 9 Threadripper-ready coolers on the way that do not use the AMD-provided mounting bracket. Please confirm with the manufacturer or retailer before purchase, as some of these models pre-date Threadripper and are being updated in production to include the sTR4 hardware:
  • Arctic Freezer 33
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
  • TBA EKWB waterblock for DIY loops
  • TBA EKWB CLC
  • Enermax Liqtech TR4 360
  • Enermax Liqtech TR4 240
  • Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 (air)
  • Noctua NH-U12S TR4-SP3 (air)
  • Noctua NH-U9 TR4-SP3 (air)
I'm most excited to see what the EKWB offerings will entail as I would much prefer something that can dissipate heat from Threadrippers's large surface area over the 'smaller' offerings.

EK is planning to release a new CPU block for this platform also they are supposed to released MLC-AIO soon which might just use that larger CPU block instead of smaller one found on their existing kits.

hoping this list will grow in days to come.

I have been following this for a few days (I don't want my CPU to sit when it comes just because of the cooler!)

They are actually maintaining a few pages here, for most up-to-date info:
https://community.amd.com/community...d-a-cooler-for-the-amd-ryzen-threadripper-cpu

I just have a question (which I will check the numbers later if no answer is available),
although the water coolers are supported, are they going to be large enough to cover the whole CPU?

It just doesn't look the size will match, and I guess a small difference between manufacturers now will be important to notice (they were oversize in the past but not now).

Answering it myself: Yes
Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer 240 = 82 x 82 mm
https://www.arctic.ac/worldwide_en/liquid-freezer-240.html

Threadripper CPU size = 70 x 52 mm
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-x399-threadripper-tr4-socket,35101.html

I think I will just pick an Arctic 240.

Thanks for the heads-up, didn't know GamersNexus has got this nice video.

It seem the coverage isn't full then, still it should cover >90% of the dies themselves, which is still great. But now every inch matters, I am gonna see which cooler has the smallest counter-sunk hole size.....

Can anyone explain (please) whay the NZXT Kraken X42 is not compatible with Threadripper? Is it the radiator size? I understood the pump end was identical to the Kraken X52 and X62

There don't appear to be any 120mm rad coolers listed on the approved list.
