MSI Launches GE63VR/73VR Raider Gaming-Oriented Laptops Sporting 120 Hz Display

MSI is hyping up the launch of their GE63VR/73VR gaming-oriented laptops as having some of the best displays this side of laptop-bound LCDs. What's being touted as the world's first 3 ms, 120Hz display panel on a laptop also features a wider color gamut (up to 94-percent of the NTSC spectrum) and HDR, which means not only better color reproduction, but also increased contrast. The GE63VR comes in a 15.6" screen size with either Full HD or 4K resolution, while the GE73VR ups the ante to a 17,3" panel with the same resolution choices.

Powering that display is an Intel 7th Gen i7 processor, paired with an NVIDIA GPU configurable starting at the GTX 1050 Ti through to a GTX 1070. Memory is handled by a two-stick configuration of 2400 MHz memory with up to 32 GB capacity. Storage-wise, MSI is proposing a 2,5" HDD paired with an NVMe drive, or, for those who really want to overcharge their storage, a "Super Raid" arrangement comprised of 2x NVMe SSDs paired in RAID0. Audio-wise, there is an ESS SABRE HiFi DAC onboard, which should deliver a pretty interesting sound quality. Networking falls to a KIller DoubleShot Pro solution.





MSI says the brand new GE63VR/73VR Raider has been given a facelift inspired by exotic sports cars, with more angular appeals and trims all around. Added looks are also bolstered by the latest iteration on MSI's cooling systems through their Cooler Boost 5 technology, which MSI says excels as a dual thermal module, through dual Whirlwind Blade fans with 7 heat pipes, thus efficiently dissipating heat out of the system. Audio is taken care of Dynaudio's Giant Speakers, which promise a 5x bigger full range chamber and 3x bigger speakers than usual. The keyboard has also been ergonomically-designed, with keys offering 1.9 mm of key travel for a better response and tactile feedback, optimal WASD zone, support for anti-ghosting capability on up to 45 keys and per-key RGB lighting support.

I know, its hard to find 1440p gaming laptops out there. Its either a 1080p 60-120hz or a 4k 60hz seems like. Realistically, makes me only want the 1080p panel just because the cards that we can get on mobile I know won't push the 4k without sacrificing settings to much (Which to me defeats the purpose) at least on some of the high end games.

Well I'm not exactly sure how a mobile 1080 fares but yeah this is a 1070, I've got a 1070 desktop version, I can play GTA V @ 60fps 4k dsr (G-Sync) with AA off, and turn down some settings , not bad at all,
but there are many more demanding titles out there and still coming, in cases you're forced to turn down settings to make it a enjoyable experience with that mobile 1070 @4K...
I would take the 1080p panel as well in this situation.

Alienware and Clevo/Sager seem to be the only options for 1440p 120Hz panels out the gate, but it's actually not that hard to replace a laptop panel and the AUO screens with that spec are pretty easy to find.

The 120hz screen on MSI laptops that I tested had huge input lag and that's a deal breaker.

These screens are new tho, so lets hope they are better.

I agree, its more than possible to play 4k in this day and age but I think we are just 1-2 generations before I would be willing to consider a laptop with one (Since Nvidia puts the full GPU's now on mobile I can say it without saying mobile cards lol). If it has G-Sync then to me its not bad but I feel we are missing a great area for gaming laptops as 1440p gives a very nice picture in games to a point where it can be hard to tell (Especially in situations where its a smaller mobile screen) and reduce the need for extra power from the GPU. It just seems odd most places skip it (Though I guess its because T.V's skipped it) in the mobile department. What other games have you tried at 4k? Have you tried BF1? I have a 4k panel but I have not tried it on my card for gaming as I default to the 1440p 144hz panel.

You know I have seen a few running around from Clevo/Sager, however I did not remember Alienware had some. As for the swap out option thats true, but in the cases of 120hz (Or more) I would prefer one with a built in G-Sync (Or Freesync for AMD) as that would really be helpful. Might look up some of the Sager/Clevo options for a gaming laptop with a 1440p screen.

What other games have you tried at 4k? Have you tried BF1?

No haven't tried other games, I don't own BF1....
But I'm sure that at least a desktop 1070 can play many more games at 4k if you turn down some settings.
I play GTA V mostly.
