We here at TPU wrote an extensive editorial on the issue of web mining possibly becoming the revenue model of the future. The Pirate Bay may not have been the first site to adopt Coinhive's javascript code for mining purposes when users access its pages, but it was the highest-profile one to be caught, since the performance hogging was enough that users started seeing diminished responsiveness on their systems when visiting the torrent site. On that editorial piece, we talked about the issues of web mining, and compared it to the advent of ad-based revenue models for websites. A piece of our argument revolved around human nature and the pursuit of higher and higher revenue, in a system that would typically reward abuse with higher amounts of mining-generated money - and how users, browsers, and ad-blocking would evolve to also block these mining efforts.

Well, Adblock Plus has gone and done it, adding a filter for Coinhive-based web mining, filtering the mining script. This will likely ignite a cat and mouse game between web mining providers, users, and the browsers and extensions we use to protect ourselves, but it isn't something we hadn't mentioned before. The Adblock Plus extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, and Android. Look after the break for instructions on how to add these filters to your Adblock Plus-enabled browser of choice.

In Chrome, click on the menu button, More tools, and then Extensions. Find Adblock Plus, click on Options, click the "Add your own filters" tab at the top, and in the text field that appears enter ||coin-hive.com/lib/coinhive.min.js and click +Add Filter.

In Firefox, select the Firefox menu (Tools on OS X and Linux), choose Add-ons, and find Adblock Plus. Choose Preferences to access the Adblock Plus profile, click on Filter Preferences, hit "Add filter subscription" and add coin-hive.com/lib/coinhive.min.js.

On Android, open the Adblock Plus application and select Filter Subscription. You can't select multiple filterlists, so you'll have to change your filterlist subscription.

That's great, but I'm still not going back to ABP even if they gave me money.

Screw ABP. Its all about uB and uB origin

I must've missed something. Is this because of Adblock Plus' allowance of certain ads, or am I mixing things up?

Yeah, let's wait that Ublock Origin adopts this. :)

The question is, will they... if so it means going for a new alternative, or more manual labor, for me at least.

ABP allows pop ups, ads in videos and pop unders.
Screw it, what does an adblock service worth if it selectively lets companies buy non-ad protections.
If i like a website, i allow ads in it. End of story.

Have some specific examples?

I use ABP with Firefox and i have yet to see something like that. I use several EasyList filters too and have turned off the option to allow unobtrusive ads.

I'm behind the times when it comes to ad blocks. What other better free alternatives are there beside ad block plus? A genuine question. Could I google the answer? Yes, but sometimes I enjoy the conversation.

In the latest version of Firefox, the instructions for Firefox do not work. Follow these instead:
  1. Open adblock plus preferences
  2. Click "Custom Filters"
  3. Click "Add Filter"
  4. enter "||coin-hive.com/lib/coinhive.min.js" without the quotes
  5. Click away from the filter entry field.
  6. Done

If you do not subscribe to their filter lists and take the time to create your own filter list, it works just fine without all the trash popping up.

Am I alone in thinking that I'd rather let a site borrow some of my computational power to mine bitcoins than have them shove ads in my face? As long as they're up front about it and not loading my system to the max (25% sounds reasonable, borrowing one of four cores from a common CPU)...

Maybe you misunderstoond something?

Exactly. AdblockPlus doesn't do any blocking by itself. You have to add filters (subscribe to filters) to it. Depending on the filters you have, AdBlockPlus will block what is mentioned to be blocked in the filters.

Which is why I do not understand that people are poo-pooing it. Here is a site that details how to write filters for blocking YouTub stuff - https://youtube.adblockplus.me/en/

This is nothing new for sites generating revenue, Its not a good way for sites to generate revenue either. ESEA was hit with a $1 Million fine for one of its coders. The coder implemented a miner in its software. article here ( https://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/11/20/esea_gaming_bitcoin_fine/ ).In another recent story, an online streamers coder tried to do this by implementing a game "cxstocks" on his website. Upon downloading the cxstocks software it had a crypominer built in, the same coinhive miner TPB use I believe. Esports personality Richard Lewis did a piece on it (
). The streamer received major backlash from his community for it.

You are both wrong. :D If you do what you say right there you actually block that coin-hive.com URL and nothing else. If you want to make it work do as it says in the article but use this URL instead: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hoshsadiq/adblock-nocoin-list/master/nocoin.txt

Or better yet just go to the official site, scroll down and add the NoCoin list.

Sure, but ads help pay for the site I'm on. I hate ads so of course I'll block them, but I wouldn't mind letting the site mine some bitcoins for the time I'm on the site.

Like others said, uBlock is so much better than ABP now that I wouldn't consider switching. And a script blocker will take care of preventing any mining just as easily if needed. I'd rather do that and stomp it out than worry about the cat+mouse game of blocking individual mining code like coinhive.
