Intel Core i7 8700K Already OC'd to 7.45 GHz under LN2; 100% Frequency Increase

Hot from the semiconductor presses, but even hotter from our very own reviews of Intel's latest-generation Coffee Lake CPUs, Intel's 8700K, unlocked six-core, 12-threaded processor has already been overclocked up to 7.45 GHz under extreme cooling. The feat, achieved by HWBOT user Kovan Yang, currently stands in first place of 8700 K processors, and is in sixth-place in overall CPU frequency ranking - which marks the first time in a while an Intel Core branded processor has achieved such a feat.

The overclock was achieved in a system that was configured with MSI's Z370 Godlike Gaming motherboard, unspecified DDR4 memory, an NVIDIA 8400 GS graphics card. The INtel 8700K was configured with a multiplier of 73x, and the base BUS speed was increased to 101 MHz. Expect more daring overclocks with Intel's latest family of Core processors in the future - der8auer has achieved a speed of 7.3 GHz on the same processor already, but more users and big overclock players are sure to make their overclocking feats known. In our own review, our very own W1zzard found that Intel's latest 8700K was the fastest, more future-proof consumer-level, non-HEDT Intel processor, and that it can be easily overclocked on air to 5 GHz.

First time in a while for an Intel Core branded processor to achieve such a feat? A while as in forever maybe. Since it's NEVER happened...that I'm aware of. It is currently the second highest globally ranked Core branded processor OC on HWBOT though. Highest globally ranked on HWBOT is a Core i7-7740X @ 7.5GHz on liquid helium(271st global ranking). Highest on CPU-Z Validator is a Core i7-7740X @7.562GHz on liquid helium(also on HWBOT with no global ranking). Anything clocked/ranked higher is either a Pentium or a Celeron.

No, no it's not even. It's just a viable alternative to what already out on the market. Too many cons for it to be distinguished as "the chip to get."

Price wise it is on par with the 1700X, which has, albeit lower clocks (3.4GHz as standard), more cores. So depending on what you'd like to do with the build, seems like a better alternative.

I am currently looking at an upgraded built, and would go for the 1700 - non X. Close to the same FPS for Gaming (1440p) and less power consumption while having more cores.

Not really. Just about every generation there is some extreme overclocker getting 6 or 7 Ghz. I remember someone getting 7Ghz on a celeron processor back in the day, like 10 years ago.
Its all marketing. Who do you think pays those guys to overclock hardware?

Im not interested in extreme overclocking in general. Unless I can run it 24/7 Im not interested.

Edit: BTW I just realized the review is up for this CPU. Looks pretty good. Not a big difference in gaming but 15%+ improvements in single threaded and 33% multi threaded with the extra cores sounds good to me. . It would suck if you just bought a HEDT platform with 4 cores.
